Pete,

I pointed tzimm here from the reloading forum.  He has a shorty 44 Mag he was going to load for a youngin deer rifle and I said he should check out the 357 Maxi since he reloads.  My Maxi is the standard 22" and I bought another standard 22" Maxi that I'm going to try a peep sight on.  Assuming I can see the sights.  ::)  He is looking for a shorty, and I can't think of anyone who can talk more about a shorty 357 Maxi than you. ;D

As a side note.  I just realized I have now entered a new phase of this horrendous Handi disease.  Once the rifle arrives I will have two 357 Maxi's, two 22 Hornets and somehow I have managed to acquire two 22lr Sportsters and two Versa Packs (one complete and one 22lr barrel) and I have two 410's.  Good lord, multiples of the same caliber.  :o

Okay Dan, I'll take the bait.

What's not to love about it?  It's my most used Handi.  Patty's is identical and there's a shorty Savage 24 Maxi over 20 ga. finishing up.

The maxi would be a great gun for a youngen. You can load it light for plinking and getting them use to shooting. Then load  up some hunting rounds that wont kick the crap out of them like a shotgun. It will kill deer all day. It will take them oiut beyond most kids shooting ranges
I have one in a Handi standard length, and a T/C contender 14". Really want another to make a shorty.

Howdy all,
Pete that is an awesome looking stubby!!  It looks almost exactly like my 44 I guess the barrel length  is 16 inch?  I guess my biggest question is how long of a barrel do you have to maintain to get the 200 yard performance out of the cartridge. I was really wanting 18 in. Will that barrel length create the pressures needed for that distance. Do you guys know if there's any availability for a new barrel from H&R as I am rather impatient and Don't mind paying full price for a new barrel fitted to my action. Thanks y'all TJ

The barrel length is 16.5 inches on both Handi maxis.  I left a little in case it ever had to be cut and recrowned.  The maxis are sighted in at 200 yards with the 180 gr. SSP.  I've heard that a pistol caliber suffers a velocity loss with anything OVER 16 inches.  I have also heard the opposite.  Unfortunately, I don't have a standard 22 inch barrel to compare.

I have a 22" & 18" barreled maxi. The 22" shoots much better than the 18" with 180gr XTPs. Still working a load for the 18", and gonna start working a cast load for both soon.

Ya kinda match the powder to the barrel length; ie, a very slow powder isnt the best choice in a stubby, but given the pistol calibers usually being discussed it isnt as much an issue as if you cut a 375H&H down to 16.5".

Pete do you think or have you killed a deer at 200 with your 16 1/2? What is your + - at a 100 zeroed at 200?
LaDano how does your 22 shoot better than your 18? Tighter groups of flatter?
I found a topper 158 frame I forgot I had its going to get the call for the maxi project if it will work? Is there a Serial number resource for the toppers in the stickies? I guess that's not the serial # it's the pat. number. If it will work ill send it in to H&R for a barrel. Did y'all ream your guns Your selves?

All H&R firearms serial number codes from 1940-on  are in the FAQs sticky, some older Topper serial number prefix letters are stamped before the patent date. H&R1871 won't fit barrels to any frame made prior to 1987, the Model 158 was made 1986 or earlier by H&R Inc that went out of business in 1986, please read the accessory barrel page info on the H&R website.

My shorty shoots inside three inches at 200 yards with the 180 SSPs.  I have no doubt that it would cleanly take a deer at that range.
However, I have not used the maxis for deer hunting.  A few years back, I watched a ten point saunter along the edge of one of my fields about 350 yards away while I held a .44 Mag Handi.  It was the last time a pistol caliber went deer hunting.

I see it now Tim A.D. I assume if the toppers could handle a 3030 should be no problem with the 357 As long as the frame is in good shape. Pete I feel your Pain I've had good Deerwalk by me at 65 yards While I was bowhunting during rifle season on public ground here in Oklahoma. Most of the places that I rifle hunt 200 yards would be the max shot due to the terrain. It gets a little Brushey! I tried the 44 mag borough on the topper frame. It locked up good and tight so I tried a plinker load never did go bang getting a light strike I guess primer has a slight dent in it. Must have a bad spring or something.
