Snowshoe rabbits
« on: January 10, 2011, 04:49:05 PM »
Has anyone been getting out for snowshoe rabbits lately? If so is the snow hard enough to walk on up north?

i havent been out.   it has been years since i have had a good snowshoe spot.    not much beats stalking snowshoes when you find an area thick with them.

Yah Myron, I wonder if we are on a down or up cycle. A few years ago I went Price co. in Dec. There was no snow on the ground. Thinking I would see lots of "swamp ghosts" show up like white balls of hair in the dark wood I'd have a bunch. I walked a miles and saw one snowshoe. I thought there were more. I don't mean to whine but it just seems there is very little to hunt anymore. Honestly, it was the last time I saw a snowshoe, it's been a couple years. Has anyone else have this experience?

same on this end.  i used to be able to go out and see them.   not so much anymore.   they are very similar to the deer herd, no where near as many as there used to be.

The snow is not hard enough to walk on.  Been seeing quite a few snowshoes besides the ones on my feet.

What county have you been seeing them, and is there wolves there? I used to see more before the wolves moved into Price county.

It has been a year now since I posted this thread. I still have not seen a snowshoe rabbit. Anyone else seeing any?

Coyotes in the southern areas and wolves in the north.
The coyotes are under hunted nearly every where I have been. You don't have to eat the ones you kill or save the fur either.

nada.   best thing i can tell you is find a christmas tree plantation....and try to get permission from them.    that is going to be your best bet.

Saw some in Jackson County last week hunting grouse west of Pray in the Black River State Forest.  Lots of sign where they were, lots of areas with no sign what-so-ever. Same with the grouse.

Kid got a cottontail today anyway. More cottontails than ever by me . I trapped 11 coons, 2 skunks and 2 possums this summer and think this is why.
