Taurus 856
« on: May 21, 2012, 01:03:32 AM »
I just bought one NIB from gunbroker, when I get some range tome with it I'll be sure to post a full review.
I couldn't find much info on it in the way of reviews, but it's based on the 85 which enjoys a pretty good reputation, so hopefully it'll do what I need it to.
If anybody owns one I'd love to hear about their experiences.

I put a few rounds through it today, not many, but it shot more or less where I aimed it. I was shooting at a ground target approximately 15 ft away so I'm not sure how much the downward angle affected me. The double action pull was a bit heavy but decent and predictable, the single action pull was incredibly light and smooth.
The recoil was light with the mild target loads I was using, I'll load some stouter stuff and post my results on those as well. I just didn't have time today to do a full gamut of testing.

Last weekend I put about 130 rounds through it with no major problems. After about 100 rounds the ejector didn't want to return properly without some manipulation, but after a thorough cleaning it started to function normally, so I suspect I had a piece of crud lodged in there.
The sights were dead on at 3,5, ad 7 yards, I didn't shoot any further than that. Didn't see the need.
I shot two types of amm through it, both handloads. The first was a cast 158 gr RNFP sized at .358 on top of 3.0 gr of Bullseye, the second was a 158 gr Hornady XTP on top of 4 gr of Bullseye. The latter round seemed to be the more accurate of the two, but both were good.
Overall, I'm happy with the gun. It's accurate, easily concealed, and a bit more pwerful than the .380 I was carrying. And being a revolver, it's much easier to reclaim my brass.

I bought a new Taurus 856 last month.  This is a 6 shot 38 snub, the regular model 85 is a 5 shot.  While the revolver did not work out for me I didd'nt use the warantee.
