The Old Stuff Is All Ya Need.......
« on: February 15, 2004, 07:51:11 AM »
I wouldn't be much fun, but I'll bet no one can give a reason why one would actually N E E D anything that wasn't avalible, say, 50-75 years ago. I admit to having a .41 mag that I really enjoy, but a .357 or .44 sp would do just as well. I have a 45-70 and never understood the need for the .450.  A 30-30, a 30-06, a 7mm Mauser and the list goes on and on. What say everyone?? Could ya do it?

As I get older I find my self wanting old guns and calibers and am not interested in the new guns. My bolt actions are milsurps! 8MM and 6.5 Swede and a 7MM all Mausers will do me just fine if I want to use a turn bolt along with my 2 Mosin Nagants in 762x54 boy they may be not as nice looking as some but those mosins grow on you.  :P  My 30/30 made in 64 suits me just fine along with my Buffler gun that is a Remington Roller that is a 1902 Mod 5 (smokeless receiver) that was born a 7MM and now is a 45/70 with a full octagon 32" barrel and a tang sight.  8)  My 870 does me fine I have no need for a new Benelli and my 22 is a romanian 69. My 22 pistol is a Chinese Walther copy that is a very nice 22 and shoots like a house a fire it gave me back my confidence that I can shoot a open sight pistol again after having a Ruger SA that made me think I could not. MY black powder guns are one side lock and one NEF Huntsman I like both but the sidelock is more fun to shoot I think though I do like the fast twist barrel of the Huntsman for shooting conicals and it does look like a old single shot shotgun so the design is at least older looking. I sm building a other muzzle loader just because I got the barrel cheap and that will be a inline also, as that is the way the barrel is. a 54 cal knight barrel that was made by Green Mountain so it is a good one. The only new guns that I own are my 22 mag Henry that is at least not a new design and a 308 Encore Pistol I bought for hunting.  Next on my list someday will be a big bore lever does not matter what cal as long as I get it for a good price and it will be used also before the days of the safety ect. Any thing 35 Rem and up to 45/70 is fine with me. But that may be a pipe dream as what I have now keeps me busy. Old guns are just more interesting in my book. I did not feel that way when I was younger but now I want what was available when I was younger not now. Maybe I am trying to relive my youth in my guns        Jim

Well Tubby,

I wouldn’t add the .30-30 and the .30-06 as rounds that came on the scene in the last 50-75 years.   The .30-30, introduced in 1895, is well over 100 years old and the .30-06 is 98.   I like my .30-06 because it doesn’t have the recoil the good “old” .47-70 does and I guess there are plenty of folks that feel the same about the .30-30 as it has shot more deer that all the others combined.   Yes, the .45-70 is a great round and yes it will do everything my .30-06 will do but where would we be if we didn’t have all those other cartridges?   What would we talk about?

Very true Tubby!  I've tried much of the "latest & greatest" to hit the market, and I too have settled on "older" caliber firearms as my choice.  I also agree that the "older" firearms are indeed more "interesting" and in my case, I find myself enamored in their history.

For example, I deplored double action ANYTHING, from a practical standpoint, but lately I've been itching for an old Colt "Frontier" model since learning that is what "Doc" Holliday used to gun down quite a few people....haha.  Who would have thought?  We've got one at the shop that is nearly pristine, and after dry firing the heck out of it, I've gotta say that ole' "Doc" must have practiced quite a bit!!!  *smiles*

Tubby-I couldn't agree more except I like the so-called newer caliber's.But yes to your question,I could .My Grandfather killed all that could be killed with the 30-40 Krag. When given to me as a youngster,I also had a fair amount of luck with it.I shot my first Elk with it..But boy was it ugly. That big ole magazine on the side looked like a growth.I traded it fo a .300 Savage(dumb) but I liked the Savage and the lever guns.

Best of luck.Jayco.

We could all get by with a 3 gun battery. 1. 12 gauge shotgun for birds, ducks, and such. 2. 22 Long Rifle for small game and vermin. 3. 30-06 for all large and dangerous game animals. You might want to throw in a 1911 pistol for protection and carry gun. :gun4:

Yea we could but it would not be as much fun!  :)  I agree with your 3 gun battery except for substituting the centerfire of your choice and yea a extra pistol would be nice so make it a 4 gun battery. Some folks may like the 20 guage better but the 12 is so much more a all around guage.  In realtity where I live a 12 guage and a 30/30 lever pretty much could do it all. A 870 with several different barrels (3)  could do deer, birds, and protection. The 30/30 could be loaded down for critters and up for most every thing else where I live. Out west it would be different you might need a larger caliber though the 30/30 I suppose you could make due if need be. SO you could get by with 2 guns but the 22's are just so handy and cheap to shoot.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Jim,

I agree with you for the most part but I don’t like picking shot out of my rabbit and other small game meat so I want to keep that .22 real handy.
