Who bothers to slug the bore?
« on: February 14, 2013, 05:10:01 AM »
I want to shoot some cast boolits from a 30 cal TC contender barrel.
.309? .310?
Who bothers to slug the bore on a TC barrel? Are they pretty much bang-on at .308? or is there enough variation in bore diameter from barrel to barrel.
I *could* slug the bore to be sure.......but that's more messing around, and if it ain't necessary..........
It's a 30 30 barrel rechambered to 30 40 Krag by SSK.

Its most likely 308 but you'll have to clear all the copper fouling out of it before shooting cast.

I clean all fouling out of anything I buy, slug, and record.  That way I know what size evrything is and know what to size for for various toys without having to slug it ererytime I want to load some up for them.  There is variation between bores, regardless of who the manufacturer is.  You may get lucky and get two that are identical, but eventually you will get one that isn't quite "optimum" diameter and that will give you headaches til you slug ut and figure out what it needs to shoot well.

T/C barrels......I don't bother. They seem to shoot well regardless. I have a 10 inch .30-30 barrel that won me a couple of benchrest championships shooting cast bullets. Never slugged it. Sizedthe bullets to .309" and it shot very nicely indeed.
Also....I shoot cast and jacketed interchangeably. I have not noticed any difference in accuracy.

Thanks for the replies. I could slug it but I'm lazy.
Was wondering if contender bores were consitent with diameter or if they varied some.

I use the a LEE .312 bullet, as cast and get great accuracy out of my Super 14 .30-30 barrel.
