Handi Homecoming
« on: May 09, 2013, 01:22:17 PM »
Sent my rifle in for barrels and it was back in my hands in 14 business days.  The forearm is a little tight on the .357 barrel, i.e. lug hits rear of screw hole a little.  Other than that I am pleased.  I mounted an old Japanese Tasco 4x32 to that barrel and will be leaving the 30-30 with irons.  I will put a peep on it eventually though.  Hopefully next week I'll be able to go shoot the new tubes.  My wife is actually looking forward to shooting the .357.  That's great because when I first met her she believed guns grew legs and went looking for people to kill.  Glad I won her over to the bright side  ;D. I also noticed that the base on the .223 barrel was loose, so I took care of that before wiping everything down and putting it in the safe.  Looks like I'll get to shoot 3 variations of my Handi instead of just two.  I'm going to bring along the 20ga and a box of slugs as well.  It is going to be a fun day.

I know how you feel I still have 3 new barrels that have yet to send rounds down range.  There is just not enough time in my weeks.  Thought when I got to stay home I would get more time in the gunroom.  That was a joke.  with more to do I get less time.  Have fun

You've got a great combination of barrels there....357, .30-30, and .223.   I hope you and your wife enjoy them for a long time.

Just a tip.  Pull the scope mount on all new barrels, clean the screws and threads and Loc-Tite them..............Don't ask me how I know :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

HWB13, I've been retired for ten years.  I'm still trying to catch up on all the things that didn't get done when I worked.  The only advantage is that now I can set my own pace ;)

Thanks Pete, I know it will get better as the boys get older, but I feel like I'm going backwards at time.

redleg, thanks for the update, I'll be sending in a receiver soon for a 223 SL.  I wasn't sure what the turn around time these days.  You'll like the new barrels, now start hand loading!

I bought one of these to trim my dog's claws (works well but she's not real thrilled about it) but I find I use it for working on my handi's just as much.  It uses Dremel standard bits, has only one speed and so little torque you can stop it with your fingers.  Perfect for delicate work like slightly opening the post hole on a forearm, I've used it on several.  Also used it with Q-tips and Flitz to polish extractors and ejectors and hard to get to places.  With one of thier coupons I think I picked it up for $6.

The lead time is the main reason I posted.  I know there are a few that have similar plans to get new barrels.  I'll take some Loktite to those base screws a day before I hit the range.  Didn't even think about it earlier.

Handloading is going to happen, just need a better job first.  The barrels were all that was left from my tax overpayment last year after getting caught up on some way overdue bills.  Part time jobs with a family to support puts a hurting on the wallet.  Praying the Lord opens a door soon, but he hasn't ever left us hungry so no complaints.
