45/70 cast load
« on: February 20, 2013, 12:01:16 PM »
Just ordered some Lasercast 405's for my 45/70.  Lyman manual says 34gr of imr3031 to start and 38.something max  for trapdoor loads.  I just loaded one with 37gr, figured it would be a good start point.  Any of ya'll use these bullets?  According to manual i should get about 1200fps.  Should be plenty here in SC on hogs

LaserCast 405 grain bullets were too small to shoot accurately in my Handi. They were quite inaccurate and produced a lot of leading with similar loads. I had to find cast bullets with a diameter of .461-.462 to have both accuracy and no leading. The Lee .459-405 bullet mould makes slugs that drop from the mould at .462 made from 2/3 pure lead and 1/3 wheel weight alloy. These shoot great in my Handi using 36-40 grains of IMR3031. You may need a shoulder pad with the stronger loads!

I'm new to cast bullets.  these will be my first reloads with them.  I did notice they were bigger than the new winchester brass and somewhat bulged them at the end.  I Chambered one and it fit and ejected fine.  Hadn't had a chance to shoot one yet.  Hope they work cuz i orderd 500 of them

See how they fit in the fully fire-formed case neck after firing some. You may need to get a larger expander ball for the dieset if those bullets shoot well and dont lead. The exp. ball should be no more than about .004 smaller than the cast bullet dia. that shoots well (NOT the jacketed bullet size it came with).
