Another build in progress, (photo heavy)
« on: April 30, 2013, 12:01:31 PM »
Got the kit form a Gent that started it 10yrs ago, and put it in the closet after he decided it was too much for'im.
Allentown/Bethlehem stock,, with an Ohio cap lock no less, but it's great practice.
Shaping the butt and wrist;

I still have the lock panels to shape. And bring the top of the Butt heel down to the comb line.

I have thinned the forward forearm, but left it's width till final shaping so I have something to clamp too. Entry and thimbles are in.

Don't pin the TG like this, go through the lock mortise instead even if the exit is at an angle, it got really thin there and now I won't be able to narrow the lock molding anymore than .200.
It should be .125;

And I have to straighten this TG now after it's inlet and pinned;

I have to remove about an inch from the rear of the cheek molding, and still try to keep that line pointing to the Butt heel, Oh and the butt plate was HUGE when I got it, gonna take some major work on the belt sander to get that thing down to size.

Here's another mistake to fix,

 That's actually light shinning through the wood, the wood is still there.
I left thinning the web until after I had set the barrel tennons,  I got it down to .200 leaving paper thin wood at the tennon inlets. This left me with the web thick and the ramrod will be too far away from my intended nose cap, Sooo,  :o  I get to learn how to make a nose cap too.
Those tennon holes are going to take a little Acraglass after the finish just for strength, they say originals tennon mortise went through the web and not having it that way is a modern development,, I think I'll stay with modern here,,

This learning how to fix mistakes stuff is the best part of the build,  :-\

Well how cool is that!   ;D   It's good to know I'm not the only one who leaves stuff laying around for years!   :-[

But it seems that this time it was to your benefit!  That is great looking wood!   :D

Need to ride along on this one so I can see the progress. Mighty fine curl on that one. It'll be a nice one.

It was written on the back of the butt as M2 before I started cutting. Interesting that I live near TOW and went down there picking up different parts for the build and handled a current Allentown/Bethlehem M3 stock, and mine actually showed better grain,  :-\
Here's the TG straightened out and it still fit's it's two inlets;
I'm learning that taking photos give you a different view of the build, I see things I'd miss other wise.
