CZ 550 FS
« on: April 05, 2012, 02:48:01 PM »
I got serious, I sold all my hunting rifles but one.
There were some hard choices but the one I kept
was the CZ 550 fs in 9.3x62mm. Since I'm not going
to Africa, no need to have a caliber bigger than
.375, this gun does it all. I mostly hunt deer and
hog, bear and elk once in blue moon, I'm good.

That is why some of us hang on to at least one 3006 , every one sells ammo at a decent price, and you can shoot anything with it except maybe the BIG bears out west .

JJ, I used to have a whole flock of bullet launchers but the only big game rifle I have left is a 550 full stocked .308 with a Burris 1.5-6x40 Euro Diamond scope.  I primarily hunt deer and black bear with occasional hog hunts so it will do everything I expect to ever need.  I will admit that the FS 9.3x62 is something that if I ever see one at a good price I will likely buy.

I think a lot of other folks might have other ideas but I don't think any reasonable person could disagree with your choice or reasoning.

I would agree with the 308 W as being a good overal round .
The 9.3x62 would get the job done also .But unless you load your own , you probably need to look to buy a box of Ammo and then the is the price !!!
Then I would think anyone with a CZ full stocked 550 would not be too concerned there .

I just sold two Ruger #1's a 1-B in .338wm and a tropical .458wm,
I handload for all my guns and these two mags were very flexable
but just didn't need them. The more guns you have the more you
have to take care of and practice with; wanted to get real good
with one hunting rifle. I like .308 win but wanted more power for
a hunting gun. I Make brass from found 30-06 cases, power / primers
same for any caliber, the bullets a little more than .308. My current
load is 270 gr speer at 2480 fps using BLC2 powder and that's from
a 20" barrel.

I gave one of those 550FS in 9.3x62 to my marine SIL upon his return from Iraq, the first time. He comes from German stock, and I felt the Old World Bavarian style of rifle would be fitting. He loves it, of course I get to shoot it anytime I want, ha.
I thinned the herd too. I am down, at present, to my pet Mod 700 .35 Wheln Ack. Imp and having my Mod 700 Mountain Rifle rebarreld to 30.06 as we speak. At 59, I find I am getting crochety and curmudgeon about my rifles, ha. Less is more for me now. I like it, I don't get all anal about working up diferent loads for 15 rifles! ha  What load are using in your 9.3 now?

Hi Rev Jim,
what I use most is 270 gr. speer bullet, Fed 215 primer, case trimed
to 2.435, OAL 3.280 with 66 grs of BLC2 avg vel. 2486 fps.

next is any 285 or 286 gr bullet for bigger stuff, 215 primer
with 62.5 grs of BLC2 avg vel. 2345 fps

BLC2 gives fastest velosity with any bullet, I have gotten better results
with bullets 270gr and up.  The 250 gr don't seem to get much higher
velosity. H-4350, all compressed loads is too slow unless your using 300gr
or the 320 gr. Also tried W-748 and Varget; W-748 only got 2113 fps with
270 gr bullet, Varget 59.5 grs of powder got avg 2375 fps with 270 gr bullet.

Next is to paper patch .358 dia. bullets as a just in case I can't get .366 bullets

Excellent choice. The only other choice that would be on par with this one is the 35 Whelan.

Used my CZ550FS, in 9.3x62, to harvest a doe three days ago.   At dusk I had 5 doe in front of me.   They kept looking back to the woods but no other deer came out.   After 30 odd minutes one of the doe raised her tail so I popped her before she ran them all off.
My load is a 286gr Hornady pill, Federal Match Primer, IMR 4064 at 50.0gr, in a Norma Case.   When hit with that combination they hit the ground.   I have yet to have anything run off.   Careful on shot placement is the secret......

I can't decide whether it is an act of senility, or an act of ultimate maturity, but now approaching age 60, I too disposed of all of my rifles except for one.

It is a very liberating feeling.  Like being a teenager again, with that one rifle that you love.  All of the rest were clutter.

The availability of top quality factory ammo, including the Hornaday Light Magnums and those with Nosler partition and other excellent bullets, makes this possible.    None of this was available 40 years ago when I first started shooting.

The last day of season, at dusk, I popped a buck who ran about ten yards before expiring.   The 9.3x62 did its job again.
