Superlight vs synthetic stocked handi. Comparison and specs ?
« on: February 21, 2013, 01:23:35 AM »
I just want to confirm how much I understand about the superlight.  Is the superlight variation, mainly a youth synthetic stocked either .223 or .243 (Yes I understand they also produced .22 Hornet).  With a 20" barrel.  With that 20" barrel are they optioned with OR without sights?
Also is the rate of twist different in the 20'' vs. 22'' barrels.  So if the only variation is the shortened barrel with youth stocks, I believe I may take a standard barrel and put youth synthetic stocks and forearms on it.  Thoughts?

The superlight barrel has a smaller contour, so less metal and less weight.  They have open sights and are D&T for scope.  Same rate of twist.  A standard 22" barrel with a youth stock won't balance correctly, it will be nose heavy.

the barrel is shorter and thinner. the butt stock is shorter for youth. all of it interchanges with full size guns, swap and switch what ever you like.

The Superlight now comes in .223, .243 and 7mm-08.  I have all three.  The .243 and 7mm-08 came with a scope rail, no sights.  The .223 came drilled and tapped for a scope with open sights.  I suspect, might be wrong, the open sights are the Youth and the ones with the scope mount are the Superlights.  Tim'll be along to straighten me out.

Does the 7-08 have the skinny barrel like the 223 and 243 or is it just a standard barrel cut shorter?

No Spanky.  It's a slim contour.  They're really nice to handle.  It's the one that sold me on the other two. I don't know why they don't make everything with the lighter contour.  If nothing else, you think it'd save on the cost of steel. Yes, heavier barrels should be available too.  Patty has the same Superlight in 7mm-08.

FWIW, Unless you are a really small person the youth stock is WAY short.

I have a SL in 223, and it came with a shorter butt, AND sights.

if I could fine one in 7-08, I surely get it.

that would make a nice light stalking gun for deer.   Some up here use that caliber for moose too

Pete,  This is an important point whereas I want a superlight and not a youth, no sights just a base or at least D&T for it.  I really didn't know about the 7mm-08... hmmm    Stew

Thanks Pete.
I like the light weight of the superlights and I like the 7-08 cartridge.
Should make a real good deer rifle.

I'll let Tim correct me, but as I understand it the 7mm-08 superlight was only made for a short time and was discontinued a few years ago.  Only the 223 is listed as an accessory barrel but I have seen 243's NIB listed.  Kind of like the 222, don't dally if you want one.  And if you ever come across a 7mm-08 SL, buy it.

The 20" Superlights have been offered in different configurations over the years, they've had different names for the same barrels with different stocks as well, sometimes called Superlight Compacts, some with and some without sights, all have been drilled and tapped for the scope mount whether they had sights or not. The compact models have youth stocks, as for the 7mm-08 Superlight, it was offered for a short time as the model SB2-7YC with youth camo syn stock, never on the accessory barrel list although some of us acquired them before Customer Support put the cabosh on selling them stating they were for repair replacements only. H&R also offered a compact 7mm-08 with youth palletwood stock, but it had a 22" standard barrel.
