30-30 to AI
« on: February 15, 2004, 11:17:04 AM »
Can I have a standard 30-30 contender rechambered to 30-30 AI or do I need to start with a different 30 cal. barrel to end up with it.

Thanks
Joe

yes you can use your 30-30 barrel to make a 30-30 AI

all it takes is a  simple reamer job.

Now I have heard that the 30-30 AI 40 degree sholder will AND I have heard that it will not completly clean up the "TC" chamber.  One says the TC is cut too deep.  And some one else says it is OK>

DOES ANYONE KNOW FOR SURE???

Thanks

Hogslayer,  I believe you're referring to the throat.  If so, yes, some are cut pretty deep...some not....in either case the Ackley improvement will not touch the neck or throat of the chamber.  GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt   :-)

Do your self a favor don't get caught up in that THROAT thing I think it's been a bit blown out
ARE you having problem's with your groups?? or are you doing the (RE) just to have a wildcat ,, did someone tell you the (throat) is to deep
If it's your grouping before you spend a penny have you tried different forends, sand bags DIF loads, ect, ect.,

I agree with Tommyt.  My point was that IF the throat IS the problem, the rechamber from 30-30Win to 30-30AI ain't going to fix it.  I have a 30-30AI and love it, but if my 30-30Win wasn't broke I wouldn't go fixin' it.GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt

The answer to your questions is NOPE I am not trying to fix anything that is broke.  I just want a 30-30 AI for the velocity.  I hunt mostly varmints. That is ground hog with the ocasional "other w
hite meat pig" thrown in now and then.  I have had contenders for several years now and have tried a bunch of forends and different experments and I love it all.

Thanks for the replies.

Is there a gunsmith you would recommend to rechamber a contender barrel from 30-30 to AI and what is the approximate cost?  thanks.

Go to his web site at LOOK at his cartridges. He has a 30GNR that is an improvement on the 30-30AI. He charges $50 for his caliber rechambers, only you have to get his dies. Check it out.
