Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Mag.
« on: December 17, 2012, 09:49:33 AM »
Have been shooting Ruger Single Actions in .22 rf, 32 H&R, .357 and .44 mag. for years and really like them.  They all have been extremely reliable and accurate for me.  Well tomorrow I'll pick up my new Blackhawk in .41 mag., it has a 6.5" barrel.  Have always read the conterversy betwwen the .41 and .44 and have been satisfied with my .44.  But what the heck thought I should find out for myself.  I do plan on useing it for whitetails once I find a load that I really like.  Hopefully it will be a .215 gr. cast swc as I have 500 of them.  Looks like I may have to try some new powders too, I have 2400, H110 and 4227 on hand and will start with those.  Also have some Bullseye and Unique also.  Anyone have a pet load?  Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

The only thing I dint like about mine was the skinny hammer, got one from a 44mag and installed it and made a big diffrence in cocking it. Its a simple drop in swap. Brownnels has them in stock if you cant locate one locally. I dont have any of my load info anymore so no help there.'

I like 18 grs of the 2400 with the 215 gr cast bullets, and for mild easy to shoot loads 8 grs of unique. I use Remington cases, as I had some starline and I couldn't make the thing hit due east with those cases.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

Right up front, so there wont be any confusion, I'll admit to never having a .41Mag, but I have been around 44Spl. and Mags and 44-40 and 45Colt and ACP for a fair long time. Most of my shooting has been cast cast bullet loads at moderate and even durn slow velo (I like the slow moving brick approach).
Seems to me that about any .40 to .45 caliber cartridge with a 200+ gr. bullet fired at a reasonable velo will do the job, and some of these have been doing it for a long time.
Have fun and dont spare the reports!  ;D

Hi,

I have BH Bisley in 41mag, 6.5" barrel and I really do enjoy it.  I think any of the powders that you listed will work just fine.  I'm partial to 2400 with bullets 230gr or under.  I think 18gr and a standard large pistol primer will be a great load.  I use 17.3gr of 2400 under a 230gr SWC-HC-GC.  Just killed a 200lbish hog a few weeks ago with it.  I will probably change to the Hornafdy XTP because for me...I want a bit more shock that an HP delivers.

Well, everything should be in order when I get back from Louisiana to start reloading.  Am going to pick up some Trail Boss for lighter loads.  Found some good info on that powder.  Right now can't get to the range anyway after we got 18 ins. of wet heavy snow.  Am taking it to Louisiana as got 3 boxes of factory stuff that I have to convert to handloads.  My Cajun duck hunting buddy has 41s in a S&W and a Marlin carbine so we'll do some shooting in the afternoons.

Im not the biggest fan around of the 41 mag. Ive had at least one for the last 25 years and have shot quite a bit of game with them and theyve done just fine but will never replace my 44 mags. that said ive yet to find a 41 mag blackhawk that wasnt an exceptional shooter. Ruger does something right with them.

I have a S&W 657-3 Classic Hunter. I love that gun. My favoret load is a 255g copper plated Berrys bullet over 20g W296. This gun sports a 2x scope and shoots 1" @ 50y rested. 2 to 3" at 100y. I like a matched pair. I have a NMBH in 45 Colt and a classic carbine handy rifle. A Tauris 45acp and a hand made handy to match. I have a 26" 41 cal barrel blank and will completing a stub project in the spring. The S&W will then loose the scope.
