Ruger LCP reliability?
« on: April 21, 2013, 02:51:40 PM »
I have seen lots of reviews. Many have no malfunctions, and many have had a lot of feeding failures, etc.  Has the quality improved since the recall?  Looking for a small pocket gun no larger than the LCP.

My post recall made one has been eating everything, even the once cheap steel case Tula with no failures of any kind. The sights are almost non-existent, but for what it is intended for, and with no snagging, it works for me.
Dont leave home without it  ;D .

ive got two. Both early guns and both run like a top. I use mostly white box winchester for plinking and gold dot or hornady xtp ammo for self defense. Id bet alot of the troubles you see posted are from guys who reload and blame there poor reloading on there gun.

I have one and so does my son, both are older models.  Neither one has had any malfunctions and we shoot them regularly.   Use Win. White box for practice and Hornady Critical Defense for carry.  Wouldn't leave home without it.

Mine is later than the recall.  Had it 2 years.  Never had a problem and have fired a variety of factory ammo, different weights and +P and non+P.   It's my daily carry gun, summer and winter.  I keep it loaded with 147 grain non+P hydraschocks.  The gun is light enough that the heavier bullets are noticeable in the overall weight.

LC9 rather than LCP .380?

Mine has functioned 100% with factory ammo(about 300 rounds) I have fired about 400 handloads through mine and it has failed to go into battery 3 times.  I blame the ammo. The bullets are 100 gr roundnose home cast from a lee mold. Handloads are the only way I can afford to regularly fire my LCP.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

Oh, excuse my error.  I was thinking LC9.
But I did own a LCP.  Very easy to carry and never malfunctioned.  But I got scared of it's lack of stopping potential.  Fired it into water jugs and some other test material along side a 9mm.  I came to believe that if one carries a .380, he's as well off with fmj as any other configuration.

On a good, better, best scale, the .380 is good.  IMO, the ease of carry is not enough reason to carry one.  My final attitude came with firing into wet phonebooks and comparing the result to what a 9mm does in the same test material.  I know a phonebook is not human flesh, but it sure does offer insight into how very puny a .380 is.

On the upside, mine was utterly reliable.

Well do you carry your 9 every day?  I have 3 9s. a full sized 1911 and 2 smaller versions.  Love them, but there are times they are not concealable, but my LCP is, so then I carry that.  Sure beasts a handful of rocks.

First round stuck on the feed ramp, the grove on the fmj round nose was dead center.Tryed different brands ball and hallow point, all had about 5% fail to feed. Sent it to Ruger " great service" they said the inner recoil spring was in backwards, had no trouble since.

popplecop, yes, sir.  I do carry the LC9 daily.  I keep it in the truck.  If I get out somewhere other than home, I slip in in my belt.  It's got one of those little versa-carry plastic holsters, you know the one that has a barrel plug and a belt clip.  Ultra concealable even under a t-shirt.  Don't carry a reload, though I ought to.  My "reload" is the little NAA .22M in my right pocket, which is there all the time.

That said, the LCP is much more friendly carry.  I had the LCP, an SR9c, and the LC9.  Sold the .380 for reasons stated.  Relegated the SR9 to a safe and only get it out for my annual qualification because it shoots so many times without reloading.  But the LC9, for me, fits neatly between the little LCP and the SR9.  A good trade off in size vs. power, IMO.

Your handle indicates you might be L/E.  Is that so?  Yes or no, welcome.
