Winchesters new rimfire
« on: December 13, 2012, 04:24:51 AM »
Anyone have the scoop on this ? Supposed to be 500fps faster then any other rf in production, and priced around 10 to 15 %  higher than  good  rf ammo. Everyones tight lipped. Coming in march 2013.

The  .17 Winchester Super Magnum.  From what I've read:  3000 + FPS with 20 gr. bullet!!!  Will be available in 20gr V-max (16.25), 25gr V-max (17.20) and 20 gr JHP Super X (15.08).  Per 50 (retail or whole sale prices?).  To be announced Jan. 1, 2013.  We'll just have towait and see.

As of Wed (1-2-13):  Winchester is introducing the "Win .17 Super Mag. rimfire".  Based on a .27 cal power fastner case (also made by Win).  20gr bullet @ 3000 fps (400 fpe) and 25gr bullet @ 2600 fps (375 fpe).  Savage is to be making the rifles. Should be a great round,  for non reloaders, for larger varmits.

The big thing that will make or break it is, who and how many make rifles for it!

that prototype looked interesting . If Winchester is making the round and not Hornady ( they make all the other brand 17's ) it will interesting to see if they start production of other 17's.

I have a 17 HM2, 17 HMR, 17 Fireball, and 17 Remington rifles.  Whenever I can inspect a CZ and Ruger 17 Hornet rifles  I ll get one of the them. I ll also try out the Winchester rimfire round and a rifle when they become available.. I got my first 22 RF rifle back in 1949 and got a 22 WMR when the Kimber 82 model rifle  come out. Over the years  most all of my shooting is at prairie dogs. I have other other  204, 22, and 243 center fire varmint rifles but I enjoy using the low recoil low muzzle blast rimfire rifles.

Unless something has changed very, VERY recently, Hornady doesn't make any 17 rimfires.  In fact, I'm not sure they make any rimfire ammo at all.  CCI manufactures all the 17 rimfire that Hornady labels, and possibly all the 17 rimfire made in this country (unsure of that).  My own guess is that CCI is manufacturing this stuff, too, but perhaps Winchester actually is if they are indeed 'recycling' some other cartridge case they manufacture for other purposes.

I read an article today on this new cartridge.  It seems to duplicate the .17 Hornet, the only differance I can see is it's rim fire instead of centerfire.  At least with my Hornet I can reload and customize the loads to my rifle, can't do that with a rim fire.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
