Handis, heat and Lil' Gun

There's a thread going on in the reloading forum now that is talking about excessive heat and forcing cone erosion in revolvers.  I use Lil' Gun in my Handi Maxis and a couple others.  I have not experienced a heat problem.  Of course, we are dealing with a single shot and a rifle. Is this a potoential problem for us?

I also use it in the Maxi and have no heat issues.

I use it in the Hornet exclusively, no heat issues at all, even in a 10-shot group fired as fast as I can reload the barrel barely gets warm.  ???

Years ago I used it in my Savage ML. It would eat the vent liners up twice as fast as the 4198 I switched to and still use. I have used it in rifle and hand gun no problem as long as you are careful, it can build pressure very fast after a certain pressure.  From what I saw in the Savage ML I would think it is a little harder on the throat and forcing cone erosion.

I have only used it in the 22 Hornet, 2 different single shots. I have had bad experience with it. It was not heat however. I got blown primers, flattened primers, 400 fps swings in velocity all with a load that was a middle of the road load that gives low pressure? This was with both rifles. After trying very hard to get it to work, I gave up. I am now very leery of using it in anything else. I am now using W296 with a 34 grain bullet and a small pistol primer, that gives me a low pressure round with higher velocity (around 3050 fps) than any Lil'Gun load can give me. It is a beginning load in the Speer 14th edition load manual. I know that others swear by it and I do not know what I did different, but never again! Remember, this powder was developed for the 410 shotgun and adopted for small capacity rifle rounds and magnum handgun rounds. People having different experiences with it does not surprise me, due to my personal experience that differs from many others.

I remember looking at the substantially lower rated pressures for given velo of LG soon after it came out. Throat erosion I thought would be lessened also as, IIRC, it is attributed to pressure and heat? I can kinda understand the vent liner erosion as it vents that pressure through a pretty small oriface (about .030ish), but your 2x that of 4198 is considerable!

I use LG in Hornet, K-Hornet, and .44 Mag... No problems and very speedy, consistent and accurate loads... I only use it around max... For anything soft I use other powders. H110 is nice in similar loadings also... I use the two for similar performance levels within their respective ranges... Never experienced excessive heat.

Same deal as LaOtto222, really wanted it to work, had pressure spike issues in my .41 Redhawk as well. So I poured what was left on the garden, switched to IMR 4227 and have never looked back. Never felt that I could keep the "genie in the bottle" with Lil Gun.

I switched to LG powder for my K-Hornet loads and find it works great.  I'm getting tight groups but I have never chronographed my loads.  I find lower pressure signs with full power loads with LG compared with starting loads with 2400.  I don't need to beat up my hands so I use only light to medium loads in my .44 revolver... 

Since I only have one can of LG, I'm not even going to consider using it in anything other than my K-Hornet since I have plenty alternatives for the other calibers I load for...
