win m92 clone function
« on: January 16, 2013, 10:13:10 AM »
Hello all, first post, and I think this is the place to go.I own a rossi/puma m92 357 carbine that seems to have a problem.Problem seems to be the improper function of the thing called a cartridge stop. That hinged flipper device attached to the left guide plate that is supposed to be responsible for the proper metering of rounds from the magazine.Maybe some one here can explain the step by step functioning of this device when it is working properly. It is spring loaded and appears to function[holds next cartridge back in mag]sometimes.Sometimes not and a 38 cal round overhangs the lift ramp and jams the gun . :'(

I can't explain the function but I have two of those guns. I suspect either their is built up fouling or rust under the stop or the spring is getting way too weak to hold it out enough to hold the cartridge in the magazine. I periodically dig in behind it with a plastic dental tool or else I remove the stock, open the action and HOSE it down with gunscrubber/brake cleaner/gunk out/crud cutter. Then I take canned air and blow it out to clear the softened crud. That generally frees up the stop. I also make it a point to shove it hard back a few times into its recess to squish out any residue that might still be there in order to make room for it to get out of the way when needed. Not sure if this'll help you but it is what I have done to keep the stop functioning. I have never had a cartridge jump past the stop so you could even have a worn part but I'd bet it is the above stuff I mentioned.

I don't know how closely this mightbe related to the problem you are experiencing but sometimes I find my M92 will throw a 38 spl round out of the action as though it is too short for the cartridge stop to stop it from traveling backward so it can be chambered.  I find however, that if I load the slugs long in the 38 Spl case everything will cycle properly.

I have also heard that if you shim the bolt rail on the left side (?) of the action it will fix the problem.  The M92 was made for the 44-40 and 38-40 and both have the same rim diameter which is significantly larger than the rim diameter on the 38/357, and the looser fit of the 38/357 through that action causes the problems with cycling and jamming.

You can also run your question past the gunnut69, the moderator of the gunsmithing forum, for his advice or past Paco Kelly for his advice.  HTH.

Thanks for the replys. This gun is clean almost new condition and had this issue since new.If the 38 rounds are metered properly out of the mag onto the lift ramp they feed nicely. The issue is only the ability of the cartridge stop[that spring loaded device on the left cartridge guide] to effectivly hold back the next spring loaded round. The stop seems to work with dummy rounds when cycled in my living room but fails in the field when fired, I think the holding power of the stop isn't strong enough to resist recoil or??I am contemplating modifing the guide to make it intrude further into the mag exit space a small amount more. How exactly I don't know?Or I need a longer stronger cartridge stop spring.A win 92 spring is available. :-\
