Needing a Maggie cylinder...
« on: December 06, 2012, 02:16:52 AM »
School me on fitting a cylinder please....

I have read many times that its a drop in most of the time but OAL needs to be watched.

I WAS thinking of swapping a nice old three screw LR only gun for a single nine. But have you seen the prices?!?!?!?!  Almost five hundred!!! Besides I prefer the only models and I haven't needed more rounds yet... I was surfin eBay and see there are a number of old model cylinders for sale. I have inquiry's in for OAL. (mines 1.63")

Any help is appreciated.

Well,
 I figured this out myself...

Seems as long as you buy a cylinder as long or longer then yours, fitting isnt too bad.

I paid 75$ on Ebay for a old model cyl and after removing a couple small burrs and stoning a bit of the OAL it fits and shoots excellently!

I have an old model Single Six that is 22MAG only, but never bothered to look for a long rifle cylinder for it.   Never really needed it, don't want one that is not the same vintage.   But a lot of folks have fitted their own same as CW did.

Thats one of the best parts, I was able to find the correct old model (fluted) maggi cylinder!!  ;)

I have an undercut (MKII autoloader) front sight on mine SSS convertible too; makes it a shootin' machine. This past fall I finally put the maggie cyl. in it and really like it with the Win. DynaPoint 45gr. HP. It smacks the steel out back with authority and has stayed in mag trim since (I'll use the old Colt's Frontier Scout 22LR for backpocket walkabout).
Glad it worked out for ya, CW, I predict you'll like it.

i had the ruger convertible sent it to ruger to get a 22lr fit to it was not worth it. buy the new one much cheaper in the long run. then the thing was not accurate dumped it no more 22 revolver's for me. :)

I have been shooting it quite a bit.

The singular problem has been Dyna point ammo... Its plenty accurate, just has problems with chambering... As many of you know, you must completely seat the bullets into the chamber or the cylinder will not rotate freely and jamb up the works... well no matter what I do, the Dyna points always foul things up.

SMALL problem as there are MANY more selections to shoot!! ;)

The gun is plenty accurate for me to hit small critters out to 35-40 yards. Off a good rest even 50 yard head shots are possible.

Well, I guess the 'good thing' is you seem to have a close chambered cylinder and accuracy always starts with that!
I have had more issues with 22 RF ammo regarding inconsistent and oversize lead bullets than ever before. The 22LR bulk packs are the worst offenders and with a close chamber gun I run the cartridges through my old Paco Kelly sizer. On a looser chambered gun these same unsized bullets load up fine. Ed Harris determined years ago, to my satisfaction, that the bullet fitting the throat closely on a RF is just as important to accuracy as in any CF. I cant help but wonder if a 22M sizer at .224 would cure your issue? (always something to mess about with in this game, isnt there.....)

I have contemplated that sizer a couple times.... I wasn't aware it was available for the maggie... as this is the only bullet it would work for...

A hunk of brass, a number drill set, maybe some lapping and your skills and you'd have one to size right on to your cyl. throats.
