357 Herret and other barrel questions
« on: March 05, 2013, 05:51:47 AM »
For background, I have a used 10" barrel I bought about 20 years ago from Ed's TC that I never used.  The box it came in is not original to the barrel but it is an old TC barrel box for a 10" 25-35.  The box is hand marked "357 Herret Bull T-4 taper/scope model".
Questions - what does the T-4 mean?  I also have a 10" 7mmTCU with a factory installed TSOB scope mount (bought new and fired about 20 rounds through it) and a 10" 22cal bull barrel with maybe 50 rounds through it, that I will be selling.  Any opinions on estimated values of these three barrels would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Most likely designates the barrel taper. Condition is everything when pricing something. If all are good with no missing parts, the price should be around $175 each. I don't believe the T/C factory ever installed SSK scope mounts so that isn't original. If the sights are removed from the other two, the value is closer to $150

Thanks Flash - you're right and I worded it poorly.  The 7TCU barrel was sent in to JDJ and he installed the TSOB scope mount.  I do have the original sights. I've also got a 44 Hot Shot barrel and some original hot shot reloading capsules, etc.  Also some 80's grips and fore ends - a variety of stuff.  I might just put it all on the classifieds here in a lot to get rid of it.  Does anyone know about the hard, black, resin type fore end and grip? Someone gave them to me,  I never used them and don't have any idea what they are or what they are worth.

The T-4 should be referring to a Type four barrel which if memory serves was the first "bull" barrels, and I believe that the 30 and 357 Herretts were the first.  A lot of the first Herretts came w/o sights and were not drilled for them....some of the very few 10" Bulls made w/o front sights and not d & t 'd for them(At that time the front sights were sweated on anyway).   I have often seen them referred to as "scope models".  Back in the day, they were very popular(still are w/ me)and there were a lot of them and still a lot of them to be had, so they don't bring high bucks....sorry.

You might get a little more out of them if you stick them on E-bay and see where it goes.

Spot on hopalong. I had to go back through my old reference material but you're absolutely correct. The Herrett  rounds started life as the 10" bull with or without sights. The 30 appearing in 1973 and the 357 in 1975. The vent rib guns appeared in 1975 too. 1978 was T/C's next turning point for calibers added to the 10" bull line-up.
