Chavez didn't worship money. Sure, he HAD money. He did not imbue currency the power to count the same as human speech, though. America could use a little more socialism.

The greatest idea the right ever had is personal responsibility; the greatest idea the left ever had is social responsibility. Both take effort.

The Founding Fathers had complete access to the Bible, but they came up with the Constitution as our governing document.

Ever notice that certain folks always just naturally defend the punks?? I reckon ol hugo had more friends than I thought. POWDERMAN.  ::) ::)
far more than you thought. He's quite popular in his own country - you know, that nation you probably can't find on a map, and don't know anything about?
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Ha ha ha! I love how liberals justify  one rich person being an evil bastard,  but as long as another rich man is left leaning we can overlook his excessive wealth and his status as a member of the "1%" It reminds me of PETA saying it is OK for their celebrity spokespeople to prance around in fur and leather because they are on PETA's side, but it is not OK for anyone else to do it. What it amounts to is hypocrisy plain and simple. If you dont think Chavez worship his money or use it to stifle the human speech of his opposition you have been standing out in the cold too long.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

Go anywhere and look it up for yourself they state that he went from an imprisoned paratrooper to net worth of between 1 and 2 BILLION. what's a billion between friends. He must have been a shrewd investor, ya think.  Who's counting  ::)

Quote
Hugo Chavez was a Venezuelan politician who had a net worth of $1 billion at the time of his death on March 5th 2013. A 2010 report from Criminal Justice International Associates (CJIA), a global risk assessment and threat mitigation firm estimated that the Chavez family assets totaled between $1 and $2 billion USD. The vast majority of these assets are oil related and were controlled by Hugo himself prior to his death. The head of the CJIA, Jerry Brewer, asserted that since Hugo's rise to power in 1999, the extended family has amassed its fortune through both legal and illegal methods. Brewer further estimates that the Chavez family and hundreds of other criminal organization have "subtracted $100 billion out of the nearly $1 trillion in oil income made by PDVSA (Venezuela's state controlled oil company), since 1999."

Cudda fed a bunch of Venezuelans  on what  he made, maybe he wasn't a socialist after all
he may have been just a capitalist acting like a socialist. And let's not forget the millions he stole from
oil company's when he nationalized the oil.
Give it up guys your hero is just another thug like Castro who lived in luxury while his people lived in squalor
Kinda seems like you gonna keep lying till we think its the truth. Like the talking points tell you to.

Actually, the United States could use a lot less socialism that the comparitively limited amount that it currently harbors.  Like most tyrants, I seriously doubt that Hugo Chavez or you, ChungDoQuan, really value human speech or anything else as much as you value the supremacy of the state over the individual.  Not only do you loathe capitalism, you also loathe free speech when it doesn't agree with your self-centered world views.  And they are self-centered and driven by selfish motives.  All sense of entitlement is manifested in greed.  Tyrants understand this and they also understand that increased dependence on government makes government increasingly powerful.  Hugo Chavez may have detested money but I have my doubts as to how much he detested political power.

It absolutely amazes me how one man's death immediately brings out the dark side of some people here at GBO  to make scurrelous swipes at other members who had not posted a single reply on this thread.

I never cared for ole Hugo, but I wish him a restful sleep without pain.     RIP, Hugo.

Much of what I know about the country is what I've been told by a few Venezuelan friends, one being the lady who's cut my hair for the past 25 years (Note to self - Don't bring up Mr. Chavez while getting a haircut unless I want a really bad one).

I spoke to them before the last election and they all said the same thing; there was no way Chavez could lose. Seems there was a rumor going around that the new fingerprint scanners attached to voting machines would allow the Chavez regime to know who voted for him and who didn't, so many simply didn't vote in fear of reprisals from Chavez' militia (who as I understand it from my friends were the very people many believed to have started and propagated the rumor). Seems that they had reason to be worried too...

"Many government opponents say they see a pro-Chavez bias in the National Electoral Council and remember a previous scandal in which the names of Venezuelans who petitioned to recall Chavez in 2004 were publicly leaked. Hundreds of people alleged they were fired or suffered discrimination after their names turned up on the “Tascon List,” named after a pro-Chavez lawmaker who released it. Chavez later urged supporters to “bury the list” and put it behind them."
