« on: February 13, 2013, 10:06:05 PM »
Hi ,I recently piccked up a supernice 1891 mauser sporterized with a fajen stock and all matching serial numbers.
I am going to try it for accuracy with 150 grain SST hornady Factory load and then try it on deer this november. Any one have experience with this round on deer ? or the factory 180 grain Loads?
I am also going to scope it with a scout type of mount ,any recomndations on brand ?
Thanks

I've used one before with the 180 gn loads.  Works just as well as a 308 or 06, or the Russian 7.62x54R or the 303 Brit or the 7.5 Swiss or the 6.5 Swede, or 6.5 Italian or the 6.5 Japanese or the 8mm or the 7mm, or any of them.  In other words, you can't go wrong with one.

Scout mounts - there are a bunch certainly but I don't have a particular recommendation.

I have shot a couple with a 1898 Argentine Mauser chambered in 7.65x53. I make cases from mil '06 and load them with 174RN bullets and 4320 powder.

The only factory rounds avalible back then where the Norma's and I did use a few. Mostly bought for the brass, when I bought them. Remington also loaded them as well as chambered a rifle or two for the round. They are expensive IF you can find them today. I did not know they where being loaded again.

I bought 6 of these rifles form Century arms back in 1988. My Pop got one, my cousin another and I have four. The first one became a 35 Whelen, another a 280, the third a 6.5x63, the last is still a 7.65. One day, it will be either a Swede or a 257 Bob for my wife.

Its a very good caliber every bit a 308 in preformance. Hand loaded its closer to the 30-06.

Been a very long time ago, but used a 91 argy 7.65x53 for deer hunting using Norma 150 gr ammo when a teenager.  The Argy 7.65 was quite good for deer.  Still have the rifle, but had it rebarreled to 257 Roberts about 6 years ago.  Acquired another 91 Argy in 7.65 a couple of years ago that had been partially sporterized.  Shot so well with its open sights, scoped the rifle just to see how accurate it was.  Using 180 gr Sierras can shoot 3/4 inch 4 shot 100 yd groups on a good day with the rifle.  Not too shabby for over a 100 year old rifle.

Hi,as soon as I figure out if the scope I chose to fit in a scout configuration (simmons 4x pistol scope)is going to work I am going to see how well mine shoots.
The bore looks great but who knows.
I ordered som eammo( Hornady SST  Superperformance 150 grain at 2785 fps) but they haven,t came in yet.
will post the results once I have them.

I do plan on hunting with a military surplus rifle for deer this season.  I do have a 7,65 arg but i'm thinking of going with a 6,5mm swede or a 7mm mauser for deer.  My bear hunting is another story...  Its a tough choice between my svt-40 tokarev with the 204gr SP barnaul bullets.  On the other hand i have the priv partisan bullets in 7,65 arg too i think there 180gr's.

Hi,I just got the simmons 4x pistol scope on the rifle. eye relief for a full field of view needs to be at leat 12 inches but i have ober 13 the way I mounted the scope.
Scope is not a bright as a leupold but plenty good enough for 30 min after sundown in a field.
Duplex reticle a little finer than a leupold standard Duplex.
But still plenty visible. $77.00 shipped so I think it will work.
if it will hold up to the recoil I will be satisfied!
Hope the combo shoots well, will know soon as the Hornady SST 150 Grain at almost 2800 FPS get here.
Ought to be just great for whitetails as long as it will shoot alright.
Let ya know when I get results on paper.
