Drone pilots medal

The drone pilots medal which was to be for unmanned air vehicle pilots that was to be ranked above the Bronze Star with Combat V and Purple Heart has been put on hold. One would wonder why a drone pilot sitting safe state side would get a medal ranked higher than someone with boots on the ground in a hostile environment. Panetta signed of on it but it has been recently halted. This really makes me wonder what the #$%^ goes through the head of politicians.

The only thing that I could possibly relate it to would be a sniper but if the pilot doesn't fall out of his chair he or she remains safe.

I think it is designed to continue to desensitize the American public to the horror of war and change the attitude of the pilots being trained for when they are told to target US. The US citizen "US".

Sorry BE but it's not nearly the same. Snipers are in it and very vulnerable. Some geek playing Xbox is no comparison.

While I back the drone program OVERSEAS, this medal is down right stupid.  Have heard complaints from new AF officers.  They joined to fly airplanes, fighters in particular.  They are stuck at a desk, flying little airplanes on a computer screen just like they did when they were 10 and 12 years old with Flight Simulator.

Not a bad gig if you are willing to spend some time vacationing in Afghanistan.  Just last week I took some students to tour K-State's aviation programs. They are one of three schools that train drone pilots. The instructor that we talked with said that almost all the program graduates are offered civilian contracts to fly drones in Afghanistan. Starting pay is $140,000.

Big Plus One.   Snipers generally work in two man teams with little to no back up support deep inside enemy lines.  No comparison at all.

As to what's going threw the heads of most politicians... I would say air.

Snipers usually work in two man teams, but not always.  Sometimes the Sniper is out there all alone.  Surrounded by the enemy.  And don't forget, some of the most feared snipers of all time were women.

This begs the question;  Is a drone pilot eligible for a Purple Heart if he develops Carpel Wrist Syndrome or Hemorrhoids?   :-\   Inquiring minds want to know.

NO, only IF HIS DRONE IS SHOT DOWN or other wise LOST IN BATTLE!  ;D :o
Correction---That should read, THE DRONE WOULD GET THE MEDAL, NOT THE PILOT!!!  ;D
After all, it is the drone that is the only one in harms way.

i could see some sort of medal for displaying unusual skill to complete a mission or bring back a damaged drone that otherwise would have fallen into enemy hands.

The words "High Score" with the pilots initials after them displayed on the monitor seems fitting.
