35 rem handi
« on: March 17, 2013, 11:49:44 AM »
What is the heaviest bullet you have used and how did it work? Getting ready to order a mold and wanted to get some ideas. I have the rcbs 35-200-fn but I use that one for the cheez whiz. I was thinking around 230-240 grain. What do you think?

IMHO the 35 REM case dosen't have the powder cap to do justice to any bullet over 220 grains...

The 200 is about perfect.

If I did anything I might reduce weight to get more f/s. but not much. CW is right I think 200 is about perfect.

If 250gr cast bullet work in the 357Mag, they'll work in the 35 Rem, I've shot 240gr Mt Baldys in my 1:15˝" 35 Rem, worked great .  ;)

Guess I should have asked if he wanted to hunt with them or just shoot them... I always assume it for hunting. (Maybe my bad) ??? :-[

I never said it wont work.. :P Heck why stop at 250g? I have some 280's & Barnes makes some 300's  ::) ;) Thing is unless your looking for sub sonic loads they have a trejdectory of a raindow.. the 200-220 is about perfect for this case capacity...  Ever wonder what the factory don't offer a 250g in the 35R but DID offer a 150g?  Yet in 356, 358W and 35 W the 250 is/was offered? Heck they even dropped the 250g in the 356 & 358 as folks wanted the 200s far more.

Mine were SAAMI loads using Hodgdon data, but Super 35 Rem loads would be even better, the 240gr FPGC Mt Baldy's ran 1925fps. Jason asked for the heaviest bullet used, he didn't mention for what, but I'm sure a 240gr or 250gr FP cast bullet at 2000+fps would work fine for anything a 35 Rem can be used for, and Super 35 Rem loads would be even better.  :P  See the 225gr NBT info in the link, kinda surprising results, prolly why they don't make em any more!

I was getting ready to order a 480 grain gc mold for my 45-120 from accurate molds. If you just order a 2 cavity mold it is 100 dollars. If you order a 4 cavity mold with two different designs it is only 148 dollars. Every other caliber I have has its own mold so I figured I would just order one for the 35 rem. Heck one of these days I might ream it out to something bigger then I would already have the mold for it.

Forgot to add.  I live in ohio so its shotgun only. So all my guns are paper punchers until they decide to change the hunting laws. Which might be next year from what we been hearing.

I lucked into a bunch of re-loading stuff yesterday. I have been contimplating a 205g RCBS mold for some time... ::)

As I was going thru everything, (6 boxes that reams of office/copy paper come in) I found 12 bullet molds!!!  Guess what one was... ::) Well its a Ideal mold .358dia. Its very close profile to the 205g RCBS.  ;D

Personally I don't like any more than a dbl mold. I have read use a single cav for precision. But I have been able to use a double just as well as a single. But I bought a 4 cav 200SWC for 45ACP and tend to have issues with keeping temps correct across the entire mold...

The trick that seems to work good for anything over a two mold is alternate which cavity you pour first.  I have a six cavity 22 bater mold 55 grain that works great as long as I alternate starting on one end or the other. Only problem with this one is the sizing and gas checking. After a while I start going crosseyed.

This is probably gonna be the on. It is 250 grain gas checked. Should be able to get some of nose into rifling to save on case capacity.

Mold is from accurate molds.com I would have to do some measuring but I think it will. Most handi 's are long throated so I hope this one is too.

45 70,

If you seat a GC bullet with the check below the neck is there a chance the GC/bullet will swage a bit at loading and then the check fall off in the loaded round?  It is hard for me to imagine a GC coming off a bullet after you pull the trigger because of pressure/hot gas pushing it.

The GC only stays in the neck when pulling bullets!  :-[ If it detaches from the bullet after pulling the trigger, they sometimes end up in chronographs too.  ::)

If you seat a GC bullet with the check below the neck is there a chance the (GC)...  will fall off ... the ... (bullet when fired)

My question exactly!  Well, maybe not exactly...  :-\   Anyway, like a .308 170 gr. FPGC bullet loaded into a .308 Win.
