45 colt reamed to 454 casull
« on: March 21, 2013, 12:59:09 PM »
Hello,

I have looked around the faq's, but have not found much info on this subject, but I see folks reaming to 454 casull.

Question is, for those who have done this conversion, is the 45 colt still accurate enough to still shoot it in the new 454 casull chamber? Or is it now strictly dedicated to the new chambering?

I have a 45 colt BC H&R. Any experienced info appreciated.

Thanks,

Norm

Lots of discussions on the topic, usually shoots Colt better after the rechamber if done with a reamer that cuts a decent leade in the rifling(GBO reamer!), but not necessarily with the same load as before the rechamber.

With the proper rifle reamer, (The GBO rental IS a rifle reamer) Most actually see an improvement in accuracy!

Mine was a good shooter before and still is today as a 454.

Mine shoots excellent and so does my Dad's.  I did both with the GBO reamer.  It's easy as pie to do and very inexpensive as compared to having a 'Smith do it.

Mine too. Very easy to do.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

Now, can someone come up with the reason that it would shoot better after making the hole bigger? Obviously you don't want the bore to be too tight.
Thanks, Jer

The reamer doesn't change the bore, just the chamber length and beginning of the rifling.

I was thinking something and typing another. How can pressure affect the case? I am not saying it should not I am just asking if some of you that understand this more to expound.
Thanks, Jer

I read this and know no more than what I did before, Tim.  Shows what can happen if pressure is to high. "Signs could be this but it may not mean anything."
Does the reaming cause higher pressure? If it does, is that waht makes the gun more accurate? Of course, as long as it is under normal operating pressures.
Thanks, Jer

Don't think accuracy has anything to do with the pressure.  The 45c seems to be more accurate after reaming because the GBO reamer cuts a proper leade into the rifling.  That's my take on it anyhow.
