Will be visiting Mobile, Al this summer
« on: March 07, 2013, 04:49:56 AM »
Planning a trip to Montgomery  Mobile, Al this summer and would love to hear some suggestions for things to do with the family while we are there.   We will be there for several days to attend a conference but the schedule is pretty open so there will be plenty of free time to do other things.

So if you live in/near Montgomery Mobile or just love the area here is your chance to brag about some of the "don't miss" things to see/do in or around Montgomery.

Thanks

Oh, would also like to hear of any good local family restaurants (local owned not chain) that we should check out.  Looking for good family atmosphere, good local dishes and not too expensive.

Thanks again.

Local Resturants:Martins Resturant on Carter Hill Road at Narrow Lane Road. Meat n 3. Ask for some relish to put on your collards. Try the pulley bones.
Country's Barbeque, just south of the Ann St Exit of I-85. Get the BBQ cole slaw as one of your sides.
Green Lantern Resturant, if its still there, about 8 miles south of town on US 231 toward Troy. Steak and cheese bisquits.
Chris' Hot Dogs on Dexter Ave, down the hill from the Capitol. Elvis ate there.
I'll tell my mother in law you are coming. She fixes Conecuh sausage and bisquits for breakfast every morning.

Things to see:
Little White House of the Confederacy.
Hank Williams' Grave. Never been, just something to say you saw.
If you are a fan of the Eagles' music, ride down Woodley Road. Its the actual road from the song "Seven Bridges Road".
After eating at Martins, drive down Felder Avenue, where F Scott Fitzgerald met his wife Zelda.
Perry Street and Hull Street have some neat older homes.
If you take a fifth of Old Forrester to my dad, you'll hear some pretty good stories.

I have heard the Dreamland BBQ in Montgomery is not as good as the original one in Tuscaloosa or the one in Birmingham.
Walter Craig's Sportsman Warehouse on Eastern Boulevard is the best gun shop in the state.

First place I have ever seen with a LH Benelli SBE II on the shelf.
Saw a Handi 280 Rem also.

Besides the eating places mentioned above, from the northern bypass if you get on 231 north to Wetumpka there is a little seafood place a couple of miles up on the right called Aw Shucks. Some fine eating going on in there. Or if you go north on I65 towards Prattville and the Bass Pro Shop, turn right at the first Prattville exit and drive about a mile to the Catfish House on the left. Some more fine eating.

Oops... wrong city.  Wife informed me she told me the wrong 'M' city.  The convention is in Mobile not Montgomery.  :-[

I really appreciate all the info you guys have provided about Montgomery.  Now what can you all tell me about Mobile.   ;D

Gotta take the kids to see the battleship in mobile and to dauphin island to da beach. Other than that I dunno.

Probably the best thing to do while you're in Mobile is take a side trip to Montgomery.

Are you driving? If so, you will probably take I-85 to Montgomery, then I-65 to Mobile.
If you are in Montgomery at mealtime, Martin's is a must-go place to eat.

Oh I just remembered , there used to be A ferry from dauphin island over to an old fort on the east side of the mouth of mobile bay. Ther has to be some good seafood in Bayou Labatre its south west of mobile , but not a long drive.  It's where Forrest Gump started shrimping, ....... I won't list the ways you can eat shrimp.  ;D

Good reasonably priced seafood in Mobile....Wintzell's Oyster House.
Take a trip to the Eastern Shore; Bay Minette, Fairhope.

+1 on Wentzels oyster house. Get the Oyster Loaf PoBoy if you really love oysters. If you ride the ferry across Mobile Bay carry Mini Ritz crackers to feed the gulls on the ride and see the Old Fort and the Wildlife Museum on the East side of the bay.

Not far from Gulf Shores, if you're into touristy, beachy, sometimes gatory stuff. (They won't let you shoot 'em, though. Trust me.)

Looks like Wintzell's Oyster House, Dauphin Island/Fort Gaines are definitely on the short list of things to do while in Mobile.

Bellingrath Gardens, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center and Mobile Carnival Museum sound like good bets too.

The Battleship Alabama sounds good to me but I've been on several old navy ships and subs before and I don't think that my wife and 14 year old daughter would find it very interesting.

Anything else come to mind?

Good deal. Then you know what a cool place it is to go hang out in. I honestly don't spend much with them here close to me ( There's an Academy Sports across the road with better prices ) but I always enjoy walking around and looking at stuff.
