30-06 Project

As some of you may know Jeepmann1948 and I are conducting a rimmed vs. rimless project. Old Fart was kind enough to offer me his barrel for testing. Last week I fitted the barrel to my Grendel's receiver with a brass .004" shim. I shot Federal Premium 165gr Barnes TSX factory ammo to sight it in. This ammo produced excellent accuracy. I just wish my reloads would have done half as good. ::)

**Not to be an evaluated piece of the testing, but here's the factory ammo group. I started low and adjusted the zero higher until the last two shots (highest) were fired.**



I ran three different handloads through the barrel firing *5 shots for each group.

#1: 168gr Berger H-VLDs loaded with Varget. This should produce 2600fps.

*First shot was off the cardboard.

#2: 140gr Barnes Limited Ricochet Frangible Bullet loaded with IMR 4064. List should produce 2900fps.



#3: 168gr Barnes TSX loaded with IMR 4064. This should produce 2700fps.



I plan to measure everything and assemble 5 rounds with all the same measurements except the brass will be resized and trimmed 7x65R brass. George will cut the counterbore and we'll see if it makes a difference.

Was the barrel a known performer before? How about number of rounds through it for 'break in'? Well fouled as many shoot that way best?

I know nothing about this barrel's past, however, it is in excellent condition and appears to be shot very little. I fouled it with 10+ shots before I got it on paper. 8)

I don't really know the history either.
I don't shoot 06 anymore and don't actually remember where I got it.  :-\

With the lack of horizontal dispersion with those and the vertical being your dialing in it does look to be a grouper. Would be nice to have a solid group with a given load under certain noted conditions (even if it isnt perfectly centered) before moving onto the modified chamber and cartridge. I like to get similar results on paper on 2 or 3 different sessions to lessen the possibility of a fluke.

That's a good idea. I have more ammo loaded to shoot before it gets modified. I could fire a few more groups to narrow the possibilities.

Nice project  you and George are working on.  I would keep an eye or your gun lockup as a brass shim (or any shim) may change dimensions a little shooting hotter bottleneck loads.  I learned this (like everything else I know :o ) the hard way.

So far, so good. I will watch the shim as loose fit can certainly be a determent to accuracy. Yesterday we had 86deg temps with more on the way throughout the weekend and into next week. I'm off for another 9 days so there might be a day of nice temps and low winds (less than 25mph) that will allow me to shoot it some more.

Id say you are close enough on the target to not mess with dialing the scope in anymore, just let it be, settle in shooting for group size, even with your warm-up ammo.
Oh, and have FUN  ;D (we still have snow and cold here in SC WI).
