Does anyone follow the big race and if so do you have any personal favorites or I don't give a darn?Who are you rooting for?

Seems to be an Alaska / dog runners phenomenon. My Sister and Bro- in-law, who live in North Pole Ak....speak excitedly about it.
     Of course, here "outside", in the lower 48, outside of the dog-mushers, there is little knowledge of the participants...

I kinda find this stuff interesting in the cabin fever day's of Idaho.It's on the Outdoor life Channel also.It makes me want to hook my two dog's up to something to burn the extra energy they have from a long winter and save what furniture I have left that's unscaved.

Jayco..

I follow the Iditarod like a hawk..I'm partial to Charlie Boulding. He reminds me of a fellow I used to work with in construction. A REAL character, they even look the same. I see that Charlie is in 5th place right now.

I am kinda a Martin B. fan but he is loseing dogs quicker than I am hair.We both have 11 left.Bummer.Jayco.

Just a tad predigest here.  I missed Charlie in 2000 in Shaktoolik when he came thought at 10:30 PM.  So in 2001 I snowmachined 156 miles to meet him at Old Womans Cabin near Unakaleet.  (See "Snow Machines, Caribou and Meeting An Icon" in Campfire Tales.)

Charlie is very down to earth and has a beautiful wife.  Up until 2001 he cut all his own wood to heat his cabin and hauled it by dog team. That year he bought his first snow machine.

He currently has cancer or has been fighting it for a couple of years.  I am very surprized to see him in the top five heading to Kaltag.  The run from Kaltag to Unakaleet is tough, very rough.

I really am cheering for him this year.  He is a great guy.

I didn't know that.I guess I have another one to root for.I herd that that one gal(DeeDee) that won a time or two had cancer.A bunch of great people for sure.

I think Charlie would be quite amused at being mentioned on a Forum down here.
You "Nothern Folks" sure redifine Determination!! "..a 156 miles on a snow machine.....")
 The Alaskan names STILL conger up visions in this Old "Kid's" mind!

Charlie was first out of Unalakleet this AM.  Everyone should check out the Yukon Quest race also.  It's another thousand mile race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse that is generally thought of as the tougher of the thousand mile races. Not that either one would be a "walk in the park"!  The Quest gets way less hype/publicity and of course way less money for prizes.

Quite a picture of Charlie, bet he is a good story teller! I see he is still "In the Hunt"..
Martin Buser is pushing on but has dropped many dogs, so don't know if he will improve any.
The way I look at it, even if you get the Red Lantern Award, "You" are still a winner!!!

It takes a lot of guts if you ask me.  I ran into a rookie at Tripod Cabin in 2001 and her feet were so cold that I massaged them for fifteen minutes before she could feel them.  

Once you get to a resting area the mushers first, second and third concerns are his dogs.  Bedding, food and water and checking them over with the vet. It takes a lot to heat food and water for up to 16 dogs and make sure the equipment is right.  Only after the dogs, athletes[/i], are taken care of can the musher rest.  It is a love that not many have.  I saw a musher in 2000 that was once disqualified for abuse. When he tried to leave Shaktoolik the dogs would not run for him.  He had to walk from Shak. to Koyuk.  He pulled out there.

My prayers are with Charlie Boulding.

   Your question sure generated some reactions...Great!!
     I am pleased to see that folks are interested in good, clean, honest (although cold) sports..
    I say that generally it is a clean sport...just don't eat the yellow snow...lol

Mitch Seavey of Seward won the race last night.  Charlie Boulding finished in sixth place.
