A little indoor practice
« on: March 12, 2013, 07:17:24 AM »
I took my new to me, thanks to Ben!   ;D , 357 Max out of the safe last night to try it with rubber bullets in my basement range.  Well, actually I wanted to see how they worked so I can try to get comfortable shooting left handed.   :(

At first I thought I'd set up some 357 Mag. brass to use since I have a bunch of it!  But then I decided to use the 38 Spl. brass I already had and use in my revolvers.

I fired one bullet which, judging by the "pop! Thawap!" interval, was traveling slower then one fired from a pistol.  It also didn't punch through the cardboard target backing like it usually does.  More friction from the barrel then steam from the primer I guess...  :-\

The good news is it still hit close enough to the point of aim to benefit me in offhand practice!   ;D  Or maybe I could add a couple of flakes of TrailBoss under the bullet...  :P

Never tried any rubber bullets, guess I didn't even know they were available for handloading.

Years ago I had some plastic bullets that I played around with in a .38 revolver.  I'm pretty sure they were made by Speer.  You could buy the plastic bullets and plastic cases to shoot them out of.  The bullets were made to snap into the plastic cases and were powered by a primer.  Never tried them out of a rifle so don't know how they would work for that - don't even know if they still make them.

I need to do the same thing Richard.  Get out and shoot a lot left handed.  I just can't seem to get this worn out body used to the fact it has to learn something different.  Yeah, I can set up on a bench and make myself shoot left handed.  When it comes to snapping a rifle up to my shoulder and shooting lefty.....forget it.  The old carcass wants to know what's going on.  It keeps telling me "This ain't whatcha do".  With the shortage, I may be out of primers by the time I teach the left side to do what the right side knows.  At that time I may not even be in a position to care ???

They still sell them Spruce.  I've got some but the rubber bullets seem more accurate to me.  I use regular brass with the flash hole opened up, prime 'em and push the bullet in.

The rubber projectiles are wasp wasted and hollow base, which may allow then to engage the rifling for some spin, hence the increased accuracy over those bore sized (+/-) plastic cylinders.

Sounds good to me anyway!   ;D

It's cheaper but messier to shoot wax bullets.  For best results you use fired but deprimed cases.  Fill a tin pie plate with molten wax about 1/2" deep.  Just as the wax getting solid, cookie cutter it with the cases.  Let cool and prime later.  If the cases are primed the heat from the wax will push the bullets out.  You can collect and remelt the wax bullets like you would lead.

If you hit something hard with them a close range the wax bullets will shatter.  A heavy cardboard box with a paper target hung over it will catch most of them.

I had forgot all about this until you guys mentioned it.  I'll have to give it a try in my .45-70 if I don't get out to the range soon.

I think the best part is the wax protects the bore if you don't feel like cleaning up afterward.

Richard,

What primers are you using? The plastic speer 38spc cases are made for large pistol primers. I found using large rifle primers gave a substantial increase in velocity.  I also found that  large rifle MAGNUM primers resulted in a blown out plastic 38spc case. :o

Seems like I remember someone drilling out 38 special cases to use 209 shotgun primers for use with wax/rubber bullets anyone remember this?

I think you gotta start from ground zero.  Get a Daisy and a couple thousand BBs and begin like you never shot before.  Look in the mirror holding it naturally right handed, then switch to left and look at yourself, and try to duplicate the way you hold and handle it.  Mirror image will be backwards, and you can quickly notice all the things you do subconsciously, like how your hands grip and the way it swings.   Then do the reverse left handed.

Then shoot all the BBs lefty and you'll be surprised how well you've switched over.  And you can try closing your right eye to emphasize using just the left.  Works for golfers I'm told.

It took me about a season to get used to the left hand change to right hand after my lead eye changed to right, but I was younger then..........After that it was, and has remained 'natural'. Ya just gotta commit to ALWAYS doing it. YMMV  ;) , but I sure hope you guys can do it  ;D .
And yes, a BIG YES to the BB gun! go for a walk with Red Rider or the Model 25 pump and just pull up and shoot at targets of opportunity along the way (pine cones, etc.) low and high and it'll work ya out.

It's cheaper but messier to shoot wax bullets.

I started shooting wax bullets through my S&W M-10 Service Revolver back in the early 70's.  I'd read Bill Jordan's "No Second Place Winner" and figured if he could draw and fire an aimed shot in under a second I could also!   ::) ;)  Heck!  We were even issued his Border Patrol Holster!  ;D   They worked fine.

So I tried them from the 30 cal rifles and was pretty disappointed with the results.   :(  But I imagine they still work as well in revolvers today as they did 40 years ago!   :D

There's always hot-glue bullets too.  ;)

I tried those... a lot!   ;)  Worked well enough but had a limited life in the area of multiple shots.   :(  I went to the rubber bullets in the three pistol calibers and I figure I could use the 38's for the 9mm, Whelen and 358 Win, and the 45's for the 45-70.

That left me with the 30 cal gap so I got a 170 gr Lee mould for glulets.   ;D  But it casts such pretty lead bullets (after being Leemented of course) I don't remember if I got around to trying it with hot glue or not!  Seems to me I may have...  :-\

What primers are you using?

For the 44 and 45 I'm using magnum (large) pistol and for the 38 I'm using small rifle.  Never tried the LR Mags...  :-\  I think I'll try it in my lever rifles!  I don't gotta worry about them blowing up the brass cases!   ;)   Thanks Tom!!   ;D

Seems like I remember someone drilling out 38 special cases to use 209 shotgun primers for use with wax/rubber bullets

Now that you mention it, I've got a vague recollection (as most of my recollections are nowadays...) of reading about that.  For some reason I never tried it though.   :-\

You guys are exactly right!   :o  I never thought of a BB gun!   ::)  And it would sure eliminate the shooting up all my primers problem.   ;)

The BB gun is the cheap end (hey, have you really looked at the full size 'soft-air' pistols AND rifles they have out now? If not, do so) and the real adult size air rifles escalate in price beyond cartridge guns. I have an RWS spring piston rifle that has NO recoil and can shoot one hole groups at 10M for sure and tight groups to way more, absolutely outstanding! No primers, powder, cases reloading equip., etc.
Yes, it was pricey, but when one factors in the nothing spent on the other stuff and amortize it down shot for shot it is 'almost FREE'! (just tell her that..... ;) ).

Been thinking about taking a bullet mold, sprayed with a release agent (Pam) and filled them with RTV.  Making soft rubbery bullets and giving them a try.  Just have not got around to trying it yet.

Richard, who makes these wasp waisted bullets? I've used the old Speer bullets but never saw these before.

FWIW I've used .311 round balls in my .30-30 with just a primer. The first 2 worked fine. Hit with a pretty healthy splat on the target backer. The third lodged in the barrel. I suspect from a lack of lube.

That's amazing!  I would have never thought a primer could overcome the friction caused by a lead projectile!   :o  I gotta think on that some...  :-\

I have shot round ball glulets outa my BP revolvers in the basement.  They were pushed by just the tinyest tad of BP...  :-\  Kathie complained...  ::)  Wimmins...  ;D

Ah so!

Ya know, I forgot something about the glulets...   I must have tried some in the 30-30 since I remember now that I actually lubricated them!  I must have needed to reduce the bore friction caused by a bullet cast in that long 170 gr. mould.

A RB glulet should eliminate that problem...  :-\  Maybe if I knife edge the mouth of a piece of 30-30 brass and force in a 36 cal GRB...  :-\ :-\

Or I could try to cut a 30 cal mould and use the RTV to make my own X-Ring bullets...  :-\ 'course it, the mould that is, would need a plug to make it a hollow base...   :-\

OH GREAT!!! Another project!   ::)   :P

Dont overthink the round ball. Instead take a note from the C&B revolver, when you seat an 'oversize RB' into the chamber mouth on one it puts a bit of a straight shank on the sides of the ball.
So if you use a fully fire-formed case for your rifles chamber and chamfer the mouth and maybe bell it just a tad, you can take an 'oversize RB ' and size it just right to make it a thumb press into the case mouth and down flush. Spread a bit of soft bullet lube over the top and you are good to go with a light popper powder charge, or in this case, a drilled out flash orifice and a hot primer. I still would recommend a short barrel for these!.
BTW, I would think paraffin (canning wax) RB's should work pretty well. As they dont need a patch to fit the bore the regular size for a sgl. shot caplock would not be right, but an 'oversize for the groove dia.' will thumb press in and be its own lube. A drilled out cone (nipple in modern lingo) and a hot cap, or even a replacement size cone for musket caps should do it.

Yes I know this was stupid, but it happened.  You do things like this when you are young, dumb, and bullet proof.

I used to be in a gun club that did Wild West skits.  We had one guy that always ran across the street, in full view of everyone and yelled "You missed".  It really ticked us off, that he would do this.  It was not part of the script.  One day I made some wax bullets in front of a charge of Black Powder for my 30-30.  When he ran across the street, I popped him in the rear with a wax bullet.  He was wearing leather pants so was not worried about hurting him too much.  He screamed, did a face plant in the gravel, then started cussing me for all he was worth, as he squirmed around on the ground, rubbing the sore spot.  The skit continued as thou nothing had happened.  From that point on this guy decided to follow the script.  He had a bruise about the size of a golf ball for about a week.

Following the skit many of the audience came forth and said that was the most realistic skit they had ever seen.

My friend's dad was working on his car. He was leaning over, looking under the hood. My friend couldn't resist and shot him in the butt with a BB gun. Let's say he never did it again.

I got a funny one about a 12 ga shotgun loaded with a birdshot shell that had the pellets removed.  I decided not to post about it because I am not sure about the "Statue of Limitation" in Indiana. ;)
Dinny, the "event" was in your part of southern Indiana but I don't think it involved any of your kinfolk. ;D
