If you haven't decided on a metal detector, I agree with the gold bug for gold. If you will detect for other things also, such as coins, jewery, civil war artifacts and such, you might want a detector with discrimination. The Garrett AT Pro is very handy for about everything except in saltwater. They make an AT Gold also that is supposed to be better for nugget hunting. They're both waterproof in case you get into a freshwater lake or drop your detector in the water.
I use the Pro since the only water hunting I do is at the beach, and I use an older Fisher CZ for that since it can work in saltwater, just not waterproof. The CZ21 "is" waterproof, but is a bit heavy for dry land use.
I think the AT Pro is like a good adjustable wrench... not the best tool in the bag, but will do for about anything that requires a wrench. Many other detectors are specific for one or two types of hunting. The Gold Bug is great for tiny pieces of gold and I think it can discriminate out iron.
