Hastings gun carriage project
« on: March 18, 2013, 02:28:22 AM »
Hi All,

Some time back I was approached by the Hastings shipwreck Museum with a bit of a problem. They have had donated to them by some fishermen who had been fishing just off the Goodwin Sands in the English channel A Bronze tudor cannon barrel. They were trying to get someone to make the carriage for them so they approached the Fort to see if they could help them. Well, I took one look at the barrel and could not resist telling them yes I would do it but it would have to wait until the project I was currently doing was finished. This was not a problem for them and in the meantime I suggested to them to contact the Royal Armories to see if they had an original plan for the carriage. Well they actually did better than that in so far as not only did they get a copy of the plans but also they donated the timber for the carriage to them as well which is in Elm. So this only left the metal work to source which they did.
Well four weeks later with a few days spare before the next project was due to start I telephoned them and said can you deliver the materials and I would get started on it. After two days it was finished short of taking it down to the museum for the fitting of the barrel.

One of the wheels turned up and fitted.

Almost there!

Some of the side arms I made for it for them.

And finally the finished job at the official opening at the museum Just could not resist having my picture taken with this one, which was opened by a local goverment MP (Member of Parliment) for the benefit of the lads across the pond.

ONce again very nice work! Those early carraiges being as tall as they were always look like they would come apart during firing..... interesting the way the iron is done with the wedges.... no need for threads.....
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!
