Any trap door specialists?
« on: June 17, 2013, 12:15:58 AM »
Just got my great great grandfathers "indian fighting gun" added to my collection. Missing pieces and beat to hell but it's been in the family for "a little while". Hammer is gone and there doesn't seem to be much left of the firing mech. Don't need it to shoot but would maybe just maybe be okay with making it look a little more complete. In all likelihood it'll stay in it's current condition for a few more generations.
I hate when i miss. But when I do, I can always come up with a reason why.

I have one that I thought was beat up. The wood is really gouged in spots like it rode in a wagon with no protection. It came down my wife's side of the family. One of my uncles had one from dad's side that was in very good condition, but I think one of his worthless grandsons got it. Probably sold it for drug money.

I shoot the one I have occasionally with lead bullets and a light load of 2400 powder. It shoots pretty straight given the condition of the bore. What it does do is shoot very well for me offhand. I can shoot very good groups, for me, offhand with the open military sights. The only change I have made to it was replace the front sight blade with one a lot taller so it would zero at 100 yds.

I killed an antelope with it, and placed second in a shoot'n match. Alliance Ne. used to hold a match just for original trapdoors. Don't know if they still do or not, that was some time ago.

A 340 or 405gr. Lee PB bullet over about an 85% full to bullet base case of TrailBoss is a great load.
