33 max
« on: May 02, 2013, 02:19:24 AM »
357 Rem Max case, tapered with a 223 rem die cut off to remove the shoulder. Chamber cut with a 223 reamer for 1.4" and the last .200" cut with a 338 neck and throater, ground to .361". Seating die cut the same way.  Make a bushing die for neck sizing if you wanted to shoot fixed ammo.

Should be quite an accurate round for a single shot firing cast bullets, and could be used with smokeless or black. I am thinking about doing one in a stubbed barrel handi rifle just to see how it behaves, wish I had a modern made low wall, #3 Ruger, or other strong single shot action to build one up into a really nice rifle.  Could be used as a "whisper" with a fast twist barrel shooting 300gr. SMKs through a can if desired.

I remember  talking of a .338 straight  a few years back using .223 brass blownout .  I like the idea of using the rimmed brass better and have thought of several other versions myself..   The problem I see with it for anything other than shooting paper is the bullet selection for a 33/.338 .  If you were to want to shoot medium game with it it wouldnt have enough velocity to expand the jacketed bullets available and I have never seen a nice flat nosed cast bullet in 33 cal. less than 200 + grains so they would be Ok for shorter range hunting but compared to the bullet selection you have in  a standard .357 max. the 33 max. would be a little less versatile.

What is a jacketed bullet? No really, I haven't fired one of those for more than 10 years now. You are right, with the speeds this rig would produce they would be pointless. As for availability of cast bullets, no time has been better than right now. There are several outfits who can make whatever you desire for less than the price of many production moulds and much better quality. I was actually thinking a 250 grain or so plain base bullet would be about right for 200 yard paper punching. Run it at 1400-1500 fps or so and it should deliver the goods if the design is correct. And of course you could come up with something in the 180 gr. range for hunting, but as you stated the regular 357 max would be a better choice - bigger hole is always better than a smaller hole when it comes to killing things.
