Aquafortis Reagent for Pallet Stocks
« on: March 10, 2013, 10:31:40 AM »
Tim posted this in a different thread.  What's your experience with it?  Can anyone post pictures?  How did you heat it?  Will a heat gun work?

The instructions state a industrial heat gun will work, my Ryobi goes to 1050ºF, dunno if that's hot enough tho. Been many years since I've done a tiger maple stock, but I used a hot plate I picked up at a second hand store for $2.

I have a couple Makita hot air guns I use in my work and I'll be using those when I try it.  I hope to be posting pix of the redone stock on my .223 Handi in the next couple weeks.  It doesn't show much grain so any improvement will be worthwhile...

If you have access to the Foxfire Books, Foxfire #5 has a section in it on Flintlock rifle making. In it they describe heating the stock by placing a large piece of flat iron in the forge. After it is heated red hot it is held close to the stock to heat the stock.
I may be wrong but I was under the impression that the Aqua Fortis works because of a chemical reaction that takes place between the liquid and the sugar in the wood. I always thought that maple was the only wood this would work on. I've always wondered about that though.

If it is a sugar conversion, Birch can be tapped like a maple for syrup it just takes more sap to boil down so birch does have some sugar. Just a fun fact for you!   :)   thejanitor

Thanks, I didn't know about the sugar in birch. It will be interesting to see the results.

I have used it on tiger maple and it is beautiful. Almost alive.  It will turn walnut black. Made a patch knife with black scales that way. Rust browned blade. Looked 200 years old when I got it done.  Never tried it on birch, tho.  I used a alcohol burner for heat.  A can , some rags, half bottle of methanol.
