Massachusetts principal calls off Honors Night because it could be 'devastating' to students who missed mark  Published March 20, 2013
FoxNews.com
  •    David Fabrizio, principal of Ipswich Middle School, notified parents of his plan to eliminate the school's Honors Night. (MyFoxBoston.com)
A Massachusetts principal has been criticized for canceling his school's Honors Night, saying it could be 'devastating' to the students who worked hard, but fell short of the grades.
MyFoxBoston.com reports that David Fabrizio, principal of Ipswich Middle School, notified parents last week of his plan to eliminate the event.

"The Honors Night, which can be a great sense of pride for the recipients' families, can also be devastating to a child who has worked extremely hard in a difficult class but who, despite growth, has not been able to maintain a high grade-point average," Fabrizio penned in his first letter to parents, the station reported.

Fabrizio also said he decided to make the change because academic success can be influenced by the amount of support a student  receives at home and not all students receive the same level of emotional and academic support at home.
Some parents disagree with his philosophy.

"It's been a tradition in Ipswich, and you're very proud as a parent to see your child, as well as some of the other children who made, really, some great efforts," Dave Morin, a parent, told the station.

Fabrizio says he plans to include the honors ceremony with a previously planned end of the year assembly where students will be recognized in front of the entire student body.

This is the problem with the country.
Success is no longer celebrated.  It is shamed.
Rather than celebrate the hard work of the kids that got strait A's had perfect attendance, were both sports and academic acheivers and examples to younger kids.  We now worry about the lazy kids and that they should feel bad about failing, that they should feel bad about not working hard to get the best grades they could.
We wonder why we have a nation that celebrates the lazy.
As Gen Geroge Patton Said "everyone needs a pat on the back, some high and some low"  seems we have gotten rid of the negitive attention and now we are getting rid of the positive attention.  next we will celebrate the C students for being middle of the road.  The team that comes in 5th out of 9 teams in a league will be celebrated as they are average.

YES, I know you guys worked harder than all those slackers, doing xtra work, xtra hours, etc. BUUUUTTTTT. You surely don't expect ME to honor all your hard work and make the underachievers feel bad now do you?? I mean, it might give them an inferiority complex or something, can't have that now can we?? YEP, thank a liberal or 2 today. Buncha crappolla. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

That's the whole freakin point of those kinds of ceremonies!!

The ones who did good get rewards, it motivates the ones who care to do better, and the ones that don't care...well, they just don't care if they're not getting awards or not and probably don't even go.

My god, where has the sense of working hard for a good result gone? Oh that's right, we don't have it anymore. Everyone is entitled to and deserves the same regardless of the extra work one may do. If one does extra it's just given off to one that doesn't do anything. Now, if people start realizing they get everything handed to them on a silver platter regardless of their effort, how many are actually gonna do anything?

this is personal to me.
i have a young relation that is
doing school work and reading
3 grade levels ahead and is in
the top half of the top 10% of
test scores nationwide. they won't
allow this child to advance to
a grade or two ahead because
"it would make the other kids
feel bad and might stir up jealousies"
consequently, now this child is
starting to misbehave because of
boredom, being able to complete assigned
work in half the time of the other children.

that's why we have firefighters that can't
carry an injured person, and law officers
that can't shoot, and teachers than don't
know how to teach, etc.

not everyone is equally qualified for any
and all jobs or positions in life.

That is almost exactly the case with my little sister. They give with their report cards at the start of the year the scores of where they should be at the end of the year. She already knows everything they can teach her there. But they're not gonna pass her. Instead she's just getting bored and getting in trouble more

Get the kid a book or two that they will like.
Kidnaped, Treasure Island, Harry Potter or some other book that they will look forward to reading and are interested in.  Tell the teacher that the kid should be allowed to read while the other kids catch up and get the work done.  I do not see a teacher saying no to the kid reading and setting an example for the other kids.
When I was in 7th grade I changed schools and one the girls was two grades ahead.  While the other girls in the class wanted to do what teen age girls do the wanted to do what 10 year old girls do and she di not have friends in class.  I could only imagine how 13 year old boys would leave a 10 year old boy alone when going to play sports or other things, in High school as the others are driving he will be two years away.

Well I totally agree with him!  And we need to do away with the Super Bowl, and the World Series and March Madness...

Oh, and those AWFUL Olympics!

I mean just because you have a good work ethic and a commitment to success and have risen to the top...

Next thing you're gonna tell me is I don't deserve this phone and need to go get a job and pay taxes!

Shoot man, i remember getting spanked in school. How antiquated is that now? I remember getting dragged outside church and getting my hide torn up with a belt. Is that even legal to do now? It's amazing how much the country of the free has restricted the way you can raise your own kids

As I said earlier.
George Patton said everyone needs a pat on the back, some high and some low.
They got rid of the low pad that motovated people with negitive attention and now the liberals are getting rid of the high pats on the back of praise.  Simply making us all one more cog in the socialist wheel where everyone is treated the same.  Just like SH%T!

this kid has dozens of books and
over a hundred jigsaw puzzles here.
the teachers won't let anyone in the
classes do anything other than the
current assignment. if you finish before
the allotted time you're expected to sit
quietly until everyone finishes. their
take is everyone should be absofrickenlutely
equal, no matter if someone is vastly
more intelligent. it's at this child's
expense that that slower kid's
feelings are spared. when this child gets
out in the business world and is a huge
success, those same kids now will boo-hoo
and moan and bitch cuz they don't
make as much money.
the world isn't a fair place, but the
21st century folks want it to be.
that's why china and india and the
like are pasting our asses right now.
jealousy of success will ruin this nation,
and we're already on the shoulder throwing
sparks off the guardrail. not much farther
to be upside down in the ditch.

Maybe it is time for a new school.  Some local Private school may be willing to give him a scholarship.
When I was in 7th grade after my mom passed away I was sent to a private school and was really challanged by the teachers, when I started High school at a good MilitaryAcademy many of my classes were review to classes I took in Jr High.  Some of the classes I took in Jr High, there were not Jr High text books and we used books I saw again in the College book store.  I needed to change schools again to be challanged for my Sr. year.
All of the Private schools I went to had full and partial scholarships for really smart kids as well as parents that sacrificed like my father.

if i had the cash, i'd front for this
kid at the best private school i
could find. unfortunately, the
big concern around this area now
is to have the "right" superintendants
of schools and to avoid making
any of the illegals kids feel "uncomfortable".
if kids don't want to go to school
and advance their learning and
mental talents, let 'em go.
most any day around here there are a
dozen kids to be easily seen skipping
classes and roaming.
i get really frustrated on issues like this
because we hold back gifted and talented
people in favor of "fairness"
i have no doubt this kid will be a huge
success, but damn these idiot "educators"
give me ulcers and the big forehead veins! ! !

Its for the good of the people comrade......Its not easy being red. No one should rise above. It is repressive to the ignorant.

I would like to see more rewarding of effort not just final grades. Why should a kid with a 110+ IQ and strong parental support get rewarded over a kid in foster care with a 70 IQ who has worked his/hers butt off to keep a C average? I do not believe in rewarding lack of effort however.

Therein lies the rub, the kid that works hard and gets C's is just that, average. Do we reward average or do we expect it. If we expect it then why reward what's expected? On the other hand the kid that excels for whatever reason, nature, nurture, or just plain luck still excels and do we ignore their accomplishments? Now, lets throw special ed. into the mix, what about those kids, lower expectations, para support, extended time on assignments, separate testing environment, modified exams, are their grades as valuable or relevant as those in reg.ed? The hard cold fact of the matter is, some can, some can't, some will and some won't. And sometimes your very best just isn't good enough. To truly have self esteem you must have suffered failure.

well, if a kid is of above average intelligence,
and can do work way ahead of his/her peer group,
they should never under any circumstance be
held back for the sake of possibly "sparing other
children's feelings" . we used to reward academic
achievement in this country, and still should.

this reminds me of the other issue of jealousy
of the achievers in today's business world.
the whiners are jealous and covetous of those
who can and will get out and do, so the gubmint should
step in and level everything regardless of
ability or work ethic.

I have asked the same question a couple of times.  If teaching is teaching why are there different scales of pay?  Why does a Elementry school teacher make less than a college professor?  UCLA is a state school and LA unified is paid by the state so why do the 1st grade teacher and the freshmen professor make widly different salaries if both are teachers for the state?  If we are to make everyone feel good then shouldn't the teachers, principals and professors all make the same ammount?

Our military, firefighters, policemen, etc, lowered standards to accommodate women and short people, and small frys so they wouldn't be left out or offended too. Many cannot do the job either, but they are PC and thats all that matters to a liberal. POWDERMAN.  ::) ::)

It appears to me that our current military kicks butt just fine when allowed to. At least in the communities that I have lived in I have not seen any less effectiveness of police or firefighters. I have witnessed police women talked down hot situations where most male officers would have just got forceful instead with someone probably getting hurt including themselves. Even though women are considered more emotional than men, I think most keep a cooler head when needed in police work than many of the male officers.

guzzi. I've lost track of the times female cops have had the tar beat out of them trying to do a mans job. How many female firefighter can carry a grown man from a burning building??
No doubt there are a lot of jobs that can be done by women, BUT, I don't believe that women belong in combat, or on the streets as leos, and certainly not as an active firefighter not capable of carrying an adult from a burning building.
My point was, and is, that rules and requirements had to be LOWERED to accommodate females, kinda like the students that couldn't cut the mustard in the OP. Thank a liberal today. POWDERMAN.  :o :o
