Rangefinding prarie dog and marmetts distances

I need some input on sucessful rangfinding techniques you guys use to find the range to praie dog and marmetts. Laser rangefinders are good (within limits) for elk and deer but I have a hard time on the small targets. Thinking about checking out optical rangefinders-anyone out there have any experienc with these? How about a rangefinging scope? Does anyone use range stakes? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One thing that worked for us is to range on objects out in the field that are in proximaty to your pds. ie. fence posts, vegetation misc. crap in the field. I have went as far as putting up markers to range them. I made a simple swinging target frame for my son that works perfect and will hold a reflective white paper 24"x48" up quite well....after that I use alittle estimation. Where I go the farthest shot you can pick up on is about 450 yds...the terrain doesn't allow much farther than that. Once we have ranged a few things out there you get a very good feel for the actual distance inside 450.

yep, I agree with skb. I range anything that will give a reading, - power poles, prairie dog mounds, dirt banks or anything in the vicinity.
good huntn.
