A sling, really?
« on: February 17, 2013, 04:00:12 AM »
I saw this forum and strangely enough it fit right in with something I started doing "again" a couple weeks ago.  It's an interesting story and one most of us over about 55 can relate to....and maybe younger, there's definitely no limit on not being able to get back to sleep.

A few weeks ago I did wake up about 2:00AM and couldn't get back to sleep.  Well...we probably all know how the mind wanders and mine did.  For whatever reason I got to thinking about David & Goliath and the sling David used.  I had one when I was a kid, they take so little to make and I promised myself if I remembered it in the morning I would make another.  I know....this is getting silly.  Anyway, I did remember and picked up the necessary leather shoe laces on the way home from work.  I have lots of scrap leather pieces so the pouch wasn't any trouble.  I made this one kinda fancy....if a sling can be fancy...in that I whip finished all the places where the leather had to end instead of just tying a knot.  Anyway, I had my sling!  As with any new firearm proper ammo must be found and the firearm must be function fired and sighted in.  Well....I ain't no better than I was 50 years ago.  I am most confident it is the idiot releasing the lace with perhaps a little inconsistency with the ammo.  I have also learned that the pouch is of too small a caliber so I will have to correct that in the next one.

Silly, yes, probably, but true!!!!  I carry the darn thing with me any time I'm in the woods, which is often, and take a few "shots" when the opportunity presents itself, (that means if I find suitable rocks).;  It's kinda fun and about once out of every 10 or so "shots" I even hit or get close to my target.  Other times....how big is a "day of angle" at 10 yards?

I never used a "David & Goliath" sling. But before my first "Whamo" I used to cut them out of scrap plywood in my dad's shop. In those days you could buy flat gun rubber bands complete with the pouch. And my house had a 120' gravel driveway, which I tried over my formative years, to shoot up.

When I could find any, ball bearings or marbles shot truer. But there was always the gravel to fall back on.  ;D and every time I went to the swamp a pocket full of gravel always accompanied me. Ah those were the days before all these adult responsibilities overtook me.

Maybe in my quest for a simpler lifestyle I have gone back in time. With my Chief AJ Daisy red Ryder and wood sling shot I sometimes enjoy a afternoon of dragonfly shooting. Say I noticed there starting to come out. Time to oil up the old daisy.

This video will show you how to use a sling and what not to do. A good teaching aid.

i have a couple in the country
for some reason. all there is
there is sand.
if you have a good supply of rocks
a sling can be an effective tool.
they were used in wartime in
biblical times very effectively.
i remember reading about 700
left-handed men who could sling
a stone within a hairs breath and
not miss.
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Trust me....in the Ozarks a supply of ammunition is never any farther away than at my feet.
My accuracy has a long way to go!

I do have a good supply of .690 lead round balls I cast for my smoothbore but I am really reluctant to go flinging away my lead.
