Handi acc. 45/410 barrel
« on: March 26, 2013, 02:58:10 AM »
With some great suggestions, one said to get the new barrel and have the 2 inches chopped off end to have dedicated 45 colt barrel.  Question is, I see that improved shooting is gained, thru most, by reaming to 454.  Can this be done on this combo barrel?
Thanks, Jer

As my ole highschool english teacher use to say, "yes you can, but NO you may not"..In other words it could be physically done but probably NOT safe as this was made for the shotgun frame.! :(

Thanks. I should say, this will be on a dedicated sb2 framer!  For all intensive purposes, knowing that someday I may choose differently, I will only be shooting Colt loads.
Thanks, Jer

It isn't just the frame, the barrel is made of 1137 mild steel instead of 4140 alloy that centerfire rifle barrels are made of. The SAAMI MAP for the 454 Casull is 65000psi, the 45 Colt is 14000psi, so even using the 45-410 barrel on an SB2 frame would be dangerous. Having the throat reamed to provide the 6º leade may improve accuracy shooting Colt ammo tho. The 454 reamer wouldn't reach the rifling since the chamber is too long.

This is what I am looking for Tim. Ok, this is where I am confused.  You said it might improve accuracy but the reamer will not reach rifling.  Not sure how it would affect accuracy then.  Help?

Question 2. Since you really shouldn't shoot any loads hotter than the colt in this barrel, I might as well send in my sb1 receiver and leave it on this dedicated receiver, right?  I have one I don't use and there is no sense in swapping out receivers if ya don't have too, right?
Thanks, Jer

I use 460 brass with lead bullets over Trailboss in my 45/410 with no mods to the chamber. It's made for 410 shells so the chamber is plenty long. ;)
Not sure why you want to cut off 2" of the barrel... just leave the choke tube out and shoot it. The bullet doesn't touch the threads for the choke so it's not really an issue.
Best thing you can do is drill and tap it for a scope or put a set of sights on it... you'll be surprised how good these barrels can shoot.

No, the reamer won't reach the rifling because it is already chambered long for the .410.  If it can't get to the end of the chamber, it ain't gonna help ya.

The .410/.45LC works well for a lot of folks in different places.  gendoc and his tribe are a good example.  They not only use them, but make them work.  The gun is what it is, and I don't think you can add to it.  If you want more, get a different firearm.  The .410/.45 doesn't work for me where I live and what I do.  I have a dedicated rifle or shotgun ready to go when its particular situation arises.  I don"t (Thank God, for once in my life) have poisonous snakes to deal with.  They have a hard time cohabiting with three feet of snow.

All my Handis and Pardners work for the jobs they're meant for.  I just grab the appropriate one at the time.

Too bad they dont make long basic 45C brass. Ive used 444Marlin brass in the old Iver Johnson 410 to make 410 reloads and would try some Round Balls if it was cyl. bore rather than a full choke.
As is, I do like that 460 idea to fill up as much of the chamber with brass as possible and agree you should try it without any tube screwed in first. I think Id go with a peep sight setup.

Since the 444M fit quite well I wonder how much difference there is in the brass 410, and those may take shotgun primers? (which are available here, unlike most everything else) Maybe you can get them in Shotshell Primers or LR?
Anyway, I never tried fitting a 45caliber pistol round into the mouth of those 444's when fire-formed to the chamber that I used in the 410. I should have them stashed somewhere, but I dont have a 45/410 barrel to try this idea in.

Ya'all are forgettin Jer's original goals. one of being......  ;)

1. Bought a .410. Have a Ruger 45 colt. wanted a matching rifle. I just do!
....

Jer, you'd use a .45 cal throating reamer to make the change in the leade, 4D lists one for the 45 Colt. First, I'd check with Gendoc, he's got some tricks that make the 45-410 barrel work real well for him, but for the most part as Spanky said, get sights or a scope rail on it, the bead only that it comes with is a poor sighting device for consistent accuracy.   ;)

Um......."forgetting Jer's original goal(s)".......per Jer,"improved shooting is gained", which I interpret as wanting to  get 'improved accuracy'. His thought of an improved leade is valid, though not achievable with the 454 reamer, as said.
To that end are my thoughts on using brass to fill the chamber and get the bullet closer to the rifling is not unconventional and a low cost and user friendly way to maybe improve things.
Just another way to shake a squirrel outta the tree  ;D ; we're all pullin' for ya Jer!
