OOPS! I messsed up
« on: February 25, 2004, 09:36:02 AM »
It seems that I got a little carried away while tightening the foreend screw on one of my barrels. I did not completely strip it just loosened the dovetail a little.   Is there anyway to fix this without sending the barrel off.

Try peening the inside of the dovetail with a small center punch.  Just put enough dimples into the bottom of the dovetail so as the insert will stay in place.

what I did was, take a (brass if you can find one) flat head screwdriver and placed it on the edge of the flap and give it several good whacks with a hammer on each side until it is nice and tight.

You might have bent the insert, not the dovetail on barrel..

If this is the case, you should call or E-mail and order another one if they will ship it without sending the barrel in.  Take a strong magnifier and look closely in good light.  If the insert is bent around the base of the screw. you could be fighting a losing battle trying to tighten it up and just damage your barrel.
....make it count

Like Robert said, call T/C and they will send you some new ones free of charge.  Whenever I have had to do this the new ones always push in tight.  Just remember to never tighten the screws more than snug.  The other posters methods would work too, I just do not like hammering on a barrel when a phone call will get you a new one for free.

When looking at the insert I can't see that it looks bent. The lip of one side of the barrel dovetail does seem to be raised a little. However I did call TC last monday and received two inserts yesterday. I just tried one and I can not push it into the dovetail with my fingers, so it looks like it will work fine without doing anything to the barrel itself.
Problem solved.
Thanks Guys
