H&R top break .32 6 shot
« on: March 11, 2013, 05:51:05 PM »
I have an H&R top Break .32 cal, 6 shot, nickel finish that belong to my GG Grandfather. It has no marking as to the caliber. On the top of barrell 1st line= Harringto & Richardso Arms Company 2nd line= Worchester Mass Paten Pending Oct 4, 1887. The serial # is 25491 with  the cyl removed I can see the number on the bottom side of the barrell assembly. With handles remove is see #5491. I think it is a Premier Auto Ejecting. I have been told that without any caliber marking it is only shoots black power rim fire, do you agree this is correct? If not let me know. I am attempting getting it back to shooting condition. I have disassembled and cleaned all parts.
. I have one problem. The top break lever on top that fold down and holds the barrel and cylinder assemble in place for shooting and loading will not stay in place. I suspect there is a flat spring (barrel catch spring) that puts tension on the lever to hold it in locking positing in place is missing. Does anyone kknow where I can find one? If not does anyone know the demesions of the flat spring and I make one?

Yes, BP loads only, and those only if you can get it to lock up good. The metallurgy of those was not that great when new and one cannot account for what age has done to it. If in doubt at all, dont shoot it, but keep it as a memento and cool paperweight.

My guess is it's a centerfire, not rimfire, model. Those old top break pocket revolvers can be a lot of fun to shoot if in good condition. My last one was an Iver Johnson hammerless in .38 S&W. Loaded with black powder, at across the room distances it was surprizingly accurate. I used it in a few cowboy action side matches to good effect.

I don't think you'll have much trouble locating a spring for your top latch. When you do, I'm certain you'll enjoy using the little gun.
