Mach 2
« on: March 08, 2004, 10:05:46 AM »
I saw on the Guns & Ammo website about a new Hornady caliber called the 17 Mach 2.  It is a 22lr necked down to 17 caliber, sound like more fun than the 17hmr to me.  So how long till we see a 17 mach 2 barrel from H&R?
I must be crazy.

As fast as they picked up the 17HMR and .204 Ruger, I'd bet they'll have one by late summer.
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

My only question is; Why???

Does this 17 Mach 2 deliver more energy than a .22 WMR.?   Is it faster or flatter shooting than the .17 HMR?   Will Ruger make a barrel chambered for it for the 10/22 that you could swap out on an existing 10/22 utilizing the original clip & receiver?  Now that would be interesting!

Why, I would say for the same reason we still have 22 shorts and long rifles, a fun new round that is fun and cheaper to shoot than the 17hmr.

Since Midway sells barrels for the 10/22 magnum in 17hmr I will bet you will see barrels for the 10/22 within a couple of months.  All the people that were a little timid or slow to embrace the 17hmr will be all over the money they can make know.  Just my  :money:

22k, And when was the last time you shot any .22 shorts?

I'll open that question up to everyone on the forum.  When was the last time you shot .22 shorts and why?  I have almost a full box of them that are about 20 years old!

Who knows, this .17 Mach 2 may just well be the perfect squirrel gun, but before I jump on the band wagon and run out to buy a gun (or barrel) chambered for it I'ld like to see the speed, energy and trajectory numbers on it.

Heck, for that matter no one has been able to convince me that I need a .17 HMR.    Sure the .17 HMR shoots faster and flatter than the .22 WMR but looses any energy advantage due to it's lack of weight at ranges beyond what the .22 Mag. is generally considered good for.  If I require more energy or longer range than what the .22 Mag. can provide I'ld step up to the .223 Rem. before going to the .17 HMR.

IMO what the manufacturers really need to be doing is developing better bullets for the .22's we already have.  Ahhh...  but that would'nt sell as many new guns now would it?  Which, IMHO,  brings us to the real reason for the new .17's.

Last weekend out of an old Winchester Model 72 bolt action, holds 22 rounds of the short.  Why because of noise and something new and different.  I just started shooting them and found they are a ton of fun without the noise.  What noise I admit 22lr are quiet enough but know that I live in town it is easy for me to go to the public hunting area close to town and plink away all day.  until I started this little project I felt the same way as you to be honest.

As for new bullets just look around Remington has a 35 grain v-max, winchester has the 35 grn supreme ammo, and CCI has interduced new tnt bullets and a new 50 grn golddot (I bought a box of the golddot and can't wait to try them they look like a real bullet not a glorified 22.  Anyway enough on my tanget I am sure some others will chip in on the shorts since I got the idea from post on this site (Scruffy).

Brett, .22 short Hi-speed hollowpoints are probably one of the best squirrel rounds ever devised. The .22 short regular speed lead bullets are great little target/fun vermin rounds also, cheap, not to loud and accurate. Even the .22 Long and short CB's are great squirrel rounds. If those are to loud try the .22 Aquila "Super Colibri" rounds, 575 fps and QUIET!!! If you feel perhaps they are not capable of cleanly taking SMALL game, try to find and ask to 200+ squirrels that used to deplete my wifes bird feeders in the backyard. They seem to have had no complaints. Headshots at close range, 13-18 yards have all proved to bring immediate and lasting death, before most hit the ground!!  I prefer centerfires and really like my .223 for varmits but have Sportsters in both .17 HMR and .22Mag. They are fun and cheap to shoot and can be shot closer to town as well. I will be getting a .17 HS (Mach 2) barrel when it becomes available, unsure yet if it will be for my 10/22 or for one of the Sportsters, it looks like cheap fun also....<><.... -  Brett, to answer your question of when was the last time I shot .22 shorts?, about 20 minutes ago in the back yard!

I love (and so does my sportster) Reminton high velicity shorts.  Small little 29 grain bullet, sub sonic but still moving at 1095 fps (10 fps faster than remington match ammo) and has a midpoint trajectory of 4.5", so with the center of my scope approx 1.75" above the bore I could set up the scope to be 2.75" high at 50 yards and be zero'd at 100 yards.  Flat enough for long range prarie "pop" dogs (pop cans).

And with the smaller bullet it's quieter, but not as quiet as the CB's.  It's a round nose bullet (not an hp) so it's good on coon pelts and such when trapping or hunting with dogs - right between the reflecting eyes.

And they're one holers at 25 yards with a 4x scope in my sportster.

Edit: forgot to answer the question....  there's no reason why the 22mag ammo shouldn't be almost the same price as the 22lr stuff.  Same with the 17hmr.  Not much brass, not much powder, little bullets, yet I can buy 223's almost as cheap as 22 mag and 17hmr stuff.  And a brick of 500 22lr's are cheaper than dirt...  I'd like to see the price of the mach 2 ammo before buying a barrel/rifle.  The 22lr is cheap because of supply and demand and what the market will bear (lots of kids shooting them).  The 22mag, 17hmr, etc have a lower demand, lower supply, and the market will bear higher prices for their ammo.  Will the 17 mach 2 be universal like the 22lr or be speciallized like the 22mag and 17hmr.  The answer to that question will determine the price.  IMHO.

I like the 22 short hollowpoints for squirrel, they are quite and I have never shot one and had it keep going where  that as happened with longrifles. :-)

Here is a website that has a photo of the new cci/hornady round.  I assume that the advantage is fitting 10/22's etc.  looks interesting.  may have to get another barrel for mine.

Appears that there are more fans of the short than I had expected.  Wish I could share the sentiments but the round won't work in my 10/22.  The noise level is about the same as .22lr's when used in my revolvers (Seems to me anyway.) and not near as accurate.

Now if this .17 Mach 2 would feed reliably in a 10/22 retrofitted with a Mach 2 barrel it could be quite interesting.

K22 - Looks like I need to get out of the woods and go into town more often.  I was not aware of any of these .22's you mentioned.

I was just over on the H&R site, and noticed (realized) that they already have a page waiting to put the mach2 on.  It is in the title with the new sportster sl (the new auto).  so I am guessing that it will come pretty soon.

I don't shoot shorts, but I do shoot CB longs and Colibris. I think the new .17 Mach 2 ought to be a hoot to shoot. I wonder whatever happened to the .17 Aguila that was being talked about over at Marlin Talk.
