500 SW Help with load
« on: March 09, 2013, 02:54:11 AM »
I'm am confused on what powder charge to use.  I am loading for a Handi-rifle. I have 325gr cast bullets and AA #9 powder on hand.  I am wanting a reduced load. The closest data I can find is.

                            GR
No. 9 350 SIE JHP 32.8 1,610 36.5 1,790 56,500 2.060

                                GR
No. 9 370 CP WFNGC 32.0 1,550 35.0 1,700 56,000 2.020

I was thinking about reducing my load to 28 grs with the 325.  Do you think this will be safe?

It's not something I would load. The issue is the AA9 is hard to light and requires a lot of resistance to get it burning. Reduced loads with the light bullets will result in very erratic pressures and maybe even a kaboom. TrailBoss would be a far better choice but I also understand you may not have any, you might be stuck with loading the AA9 but at lowest printed data. Better safe than sorry.

That's what I'm afraid of.  I know some powders can act funny with reduced loads.  With the market they way it is right now I can't hardly find anything.  Not many reduced loads listed for this caliber.  Most people load it at higher velocities.

This I can help with. Unique powder- 10 to 14 gr, you can use either Std large rifle primer or Mag Large pistol. You can use Large rifle primers and 18 to 22 gr Blue dot. My accuracy load is 20 gr of Blue Dot and the Lee 440 gr lead cast. 1320 fps, 1.25 " at my 75 yard range. You could also use 18 -24 gr of 2400.  I find that Blue Dot is easier than most to find, as it is mostly used in magnum shotgun loads. Let me know how it works out for you.

I ended up finding some accurate 5744.  I'm going to give it a try.  I've read it is a fairly safe powder for use in this caliber.  I looked at 50-70 load data and the data accurate had listed for a 370 grain lead bullet.  I used accurate's data for the heavier bullet.  It was supposed to be around 1270 fps for that bullet.  I expect my load to be slightly higher velocity due to the fact My bullet is 325gr.

I have some 5744 also, and that is also a good powder. I started by using 50/70 also and working from there, and there are some handgun loads for shooters wanting reduced loads for their pistol that worked out fine.
