Coleman 530 "GI Pocket Stove"
« on: March 28, 2013, 01:41:41 AM »
I'm not a big fan of Coleman gasoline stoves/lanterns (I prefer propane). However, I got this the other day because I like vintage camping gear and it filled a hole in my stove collection. Might not be driving anywhere in certain emergency situations and a few gallons of gas removed from a vehicle will run this thing for a loooooong time...

A long, long time ago when I was a tanker in the Marines, we had the Model 1950 version stove.  We used them often in the field to heat our C-Rations.  While I was at Camp LeJeune in 1966, we were getting ready to go on a float and were checking all of the OEM gear.  One of the stoves did not work, so the Plt. Sgt. said to survey it (throw it away, trash it, etc.)  I asked him if I could have it and he said I could.  Later, with a little cleaning of the generator and oiling the leather washer in the pump, I got it working.  I still have that stove and have used it all these years while camping or hunting to fix a pot of coffe or cook a meal. I run Coleman lantern fuel in it, but in a pinch, it would probably run on anything flamable like alcohol. I didn't have a orginal case so I made one for it.  It fits nicely in the side pocket of a medium ALICE pack when I want to travel light.  I don't know if they still have them in stock, but Coleman's Military Surplus had them a while back.

Update: I just checked the web site.  They are out of the "New with case" but they have the used without the case for $85.

My father gave me his when I was in the service 40 years ago, it still works, but as he said, it will burn anything but water.  I found that what it really needs is cast iron to spread that intense heat.  I got another one off ebay a year or so ago, but haven't gotten it to work yet. When the power is off we use it to make tea and breakfast.

The kit originally came with a "diffuser plate." A steel sheet metal disk that sat atop the burner.

I've seen pictures of the steel plate, but haven't found one.  Cast iron works well tho.
