Dodgeball ban at New Hampshire school district after bullying
Published March 28, 2013
Associated Press   WINDHAM, N.H. –  A New Hampshire school district has banned dodgeball and other "human target" activities over concerns about violence and bullying.
The school board in Windham voted 4-1 last week to remove the game and nine others from the district's curriculum.

The Eagle-Tribune reports the board voted after a committee of physical education teachers studied the issue. A middle school parent complained his child was bullied during a dodgeball game.
The committee recommended eliminating the game, and others, including prison ball, slaughter, and bombardment.

"We spend a lot of time making sure our kids are violence free," Windham superintendent Dr. Henry LaBranche said. "Here we have games where we use children as targets. That seems to be counter to what we are trying to accomplish with our anti-bullying campaign."
School Board member Dennis Senibaldi cast the sole vote against the ban.
"We have rules that are set in place to deal with bullying," he said. "We don't need to ban an entire round of games just to enforce those rules."
The National Association for Sport and Physical Education said there are any number of reasons to drop dodgeball.

"It's an elimination game," said Andrew Mead, program manager at NASPE. "Games like dodgeball and tag don't keep kids involved and physically active. They objectify slower students who don't catch as well."
Senibaldi offered a solution.
"We could just do it on a point system," he said. "So, no one gets knocked out right away."

Windham was once a nice, small working class NH town. Unfortunately it is in close proximity to Boston. About 15 - 20 years ago rich, liberal Massholes started moving to Windham in droves and building McMansions to "get out in the country". They turned Windham into exactly what they left in Mass. - an overpopulated suburb of Boston. Of course the Massholes who moved there wanted "services" so they drove up the property taxes so high that very few working class Windham natives can afford to live there anymore.

It has gone from a nice country town to a Boston suburb so this story doesn't surprise me in the least.

back in the day when I was in school dodge ball was called smear the queer. And it was open season on all the guys who didn't play sports or acted sissy. So you might say it had some bully aspects to it.
But if we don't allow youth to face problems and learn to deal with them how on earth will they make it when mom and dad and school is not around to play mother hen ?

I loved d ball in school. A male teacher played too, very roughly. We would put a bounty on him, so many btls of milk we had for break every day.
A girl in class was even poorer financially than the rest of us and never had milk money. The teacher would put on a great act of trying to avoid her hitting him but would let HER get him out for the milk bounty. This worked quite well. We avoided hitting her so she could get the teacher, she ended up with more milk than she could drink so shared with her brother. I wonder where Carol is today?? POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Dodgeball is the game of choice for my scouts at den meetings. Anytime I let them pick the game it is always dodgeball.

I grew up in the coal region of North Eastern Pennsylvania. We had our own version of dodgeball. We would choose sides and separate along the local train tracks. We would then start throwing the rocks in the railroad bed at each other. Winner was the last one to get hit. I have 2 scars on my face to prove it. One on the bridge of my nose and the  other just above the right eye. We had one kid who should have been a professional pitcher. He could throw a rock farther and more accurate than anyone else in the town.

Aaah..yes I forgot "smear the queer", and everyone had fun playing it. Games like dodgeball built character, and your right shootall it taught kids how to deal with losing. When kids get in the real world there are times when they are going to lose, and they are not prepared for it, and can't handle it. All through school kids are taught that there are no losers, then they turn them loose in the real world, and wonder where the Adam Lanza's come from.

And maybe they should ban the school board for Stupidity.  ::)
I grew up in a gold mining and logging town. Some of the guys could throw the ball as hard and fast as a softball.

gee girls played kick ball back in the day , wore dresses doing it . Of course the dresses were long enough to enable them to remain ladies while playing.

Dodgeball was a blood sport in High School. Our sadist coach insisted on using the slow pitch softball sized rubber balls. From the free throw line a good throw would bounce off of the wall right back into your hands or very nearly.

If it weren't for dodgeball,  it is possible that the nerdy kids who are now supervisors all over corporate America would not be such evil bastards set on destruction of the working class (who can still throw a 75 mph rubber ball). ;D
