While on the Air Force IG team we went out to remote sites where they had to produce their own power.  Some of these locations were small bases, and needed lots of power.  They had some really big engines there.  Granted not this big, but still huge to me.  I remember two locations where they had catwalks around the engine so the mechanics could walk around and check on things.

This e-mail was being sent around my company the other day. We have a dozen 2500 HP V10's at our station and they have 18 inch piston bores. These monsters have a 38 inch piston bore. That crank shaft is a piece of work. I'd like to see the place that machined it. To replace the crankshaft in one of our 2500HP units, the cost is a million dollars. Can't imagine what one of those cost.

Thats a big motor to be sure! During my life on the river I operated several EMD's and Fairbanks Morse OP's  The biggest I came across and handled were V16 EMD's Turbo charged developing about 3,500 SHP each IN a twin engine set that turned 5 blade Props in excess of ten feet in diameter.
 
But that puppy is way bigger and probably runs on heavy fuel # 6 bunkers.
