Optimum scope power...
« on: April 05, 2013, 09:00:51 AM »
Have a 22LR 10" bbl.  I need to hold the gun closer and brace my elbow against my hip, but the Burris 4x has too much eye relief.  Already have forward extending rings.  Now, anything over 4x seems too much for a small game pistol, but 2x is too little.   Not comfortable with the Taco hold so I can''t use a rifle scope.   Any suggestions for a medium eye relief scope suited to 22LR hunting pistol?

Same question about favorite scopes for 30 Herrett if anyone cares to comment.

Thanks.  Tom

Well, one of the scopes out there that has wide range of eye relief is the cheap NC Star 2-7X pistol scope.
Have one on my 14" 17Mach2 and it works good.

For others like the 30 Herrett I like the older straight 2x Bushnell scopes.
The older Burris 2-7x pistol scope has a pretty good range too.

You will find that as you get used to using pistol scopes you can make use of more magnification.

I use T/C & Leupold scopes on my handguns.

You have to judge depending on your most commonly used distance.  If you only shoot to 50meters maybe a 2 or 3x will serve. There are also variables such as 1.5 to 4x.  Eye relief is another matter.  As mentioned, the more time you spend using the scope the easier it is to accommodate more power.  Then, the target size and light conditions dictate a lot.  Rifle scopes become very useful.

Years ago I mounted a Scout scope on a long barreled pistol.  Set it up to shoot bowlings pins on 22LR team.
Well the position I shot from was to hold the pistol in my strong hand and place the trigger guard in the crook of my elbow of the weak hand and then grab my strong hand forearm with my weak hand.  Found it to be a stable platform.  I was about to buy another set up to shoot silohuettes when I got a job offer and moved from that club.
We stopped shooting the bowling pins at the club and sold the scope when too many people would complain that I was not allowed to shoot it at club shoots as I was winning by too large of a margin.
I used the same gun to out shoot a buddy with a rifle.  Try the position, you will find it stabel and easy to shoot.
While the Leupold scout scope is 2.5 power, burris makes one that has a variable magnification and may be the answer to an all around squirrel getter.
