Weird rust colored lines in my bore???
« on: February 21, 2004, 04:22:18 AM »
I shot my new rifle yesterday. Before I shot it you could look into the end of the barrel and see nothing unusual, but after you could see little white or  rust colored lines. Does anyone know where these came from? They did not go away after I cleaned the gun. I don't see how rust could form that quick. It was only a time period of two hours. Does anyone know how I could remove them? Thanks

It must be brass jacket material. Try some "Sweets 7.62 Solvent". Make sure you do it outside 'cause it stinks. Good luck.

Yes, it is copper from the bullets.  There are copper solvents for that, see your local gunshop.

Terry  Many new barrels must go through a smoothing process to stop the deposition of bullet jacket material.  Shooting is the easy way to do this but frequent  cleaning must be done during this time..  There is a lot of variance among barrels so it is impossible to say how many shots it will take before the jacket fouling reduces to a manageable level..  Some barrels will foul with as few as 5 shots.  Use the ammoniated copper remover every few shots til you can shoot without the streaking showing up.  Accuracy should improve over time, especially when shooting long strings.
