Looking for an aftermarket Polymer stock for M1 Carbine.
« on: March 26, 2013, 03:28:42 AM »
I know Choate makes a one piece pistol grip one that would be ideal but the disclaimer says "for military only" will not fit the Universal.  I know the Universal has some horrible reputation for being non-military but it was the one that my late Father owned when he passed away and the one with sentimental value to me.  After owning it for 20 years with never shooting it I took it to the range with a friend who had a "military" version.  Hate to say this in front of some purist but that Universal outshot his military version.  However, I hate the fat stocks come on either and would like a slimmer one.  Does anyone know of a company that makes aftermarket polymer stocks that might fit the poor ole Universal?

Depending on which version of the Universal Carbine you have there could be a way to use the Choate stock.  The early models used mostly USGI parts except for the trigger housing group. This is why Choate says it only fits the military model carbines.  The trigger housing on the Universal is wider than the GI. If you have one of these, then you can replace it with a USGI one. It may require a little fitting to get the right fit though.  Depending of which of the later models you may have, it may be possible.  There were several modifications that Universal did to the gas piston, slide and receiver that may not allow the Choate stock to fit. Some models use a solid pin, others use a roll pin to hold the trigger housing to the receiver.  I've used a nail cut to length on ones with roll pins. The internal parts can change over.  SARCO has stripped trigger housings that are not too expensive.  I'm sure you could find videos on Youtube that show how its done.  You may be able to find someone in your area that is familar with carbines to help you.  It's not all that difficult.  Also, I think that you could just open up the area of the Choate stock where the trigger housing fits with a file and sanding for the barrel and receiver to fit.  I replaced the trigger housing on my Universal and it fits the military stock just fine.   I use my Universal to hunt with and it will hold a 1" to 1 1/2 group at 100 yds.  It wears a scope as my old eyes don't see as well as they used to.  My Inland with open sights being shot by some  with younger eyes does pretty good as well.  Hope this helps some.

Thanks Bravo.  If it only involves opening up the Choate stock a bit I have a Dremel tool that could handle that chore as long as everything else falls in the right place.

Carbine stocks get thin on the right side for the relief cut for the slide.  Univeral's may be of different deminsions so if you go that route, trim the Choate stock a little at a time.  It needs to be snug but allow the slide to move freely.

I have an old, but never used by me, Owen Stock Co retractable stock liek this one:
http://www.rockislandauction.com/viewitem/aid/52/lid/1661
 except mine does not have the top handguard and i am not sure if it fits the Universal.
Still, you're welcome to it as its just sittingin my garage.
Not sure on a fair price, i know I paid 100$ for it but ithink you can get a new one for less.  SInce mine is missing a part, it is certainly worth less than even a new one.

I am looking for a 5/8" wad punch and/or some .625" hard card wads...

I may take you up on that cpileri if I can't get this Choate to fit.  This is what the pistol grip Choate looks like;

Oops.  My copy and paste didn't work too good.
