Quick trigger guard quesiton...
« on: April 11, 2013, 06:22:57 PM »
Have an AF ser#  Topper 158 ['69?] with cheap looking plastic trigger guard.  Will a 'modern' plastic trigger guard fit?  The pin locations seem to be the same as an SB2.

Thanks.

Maybe, but Numrich lists a different part number for satin and glossy, and a break at AR, may be the same trigger guard and they just changed the finish. FWIW, I have a gloss trigger guard and it fits a modern frame, so I suspect that's all they changed.

The two trigger guards are basically the same. The later version (AR prefix on) has a clearance detail on the left side of the trigger slot to accommodate the trigger extension on the transfer bar models.

This later model should work OK on the earlier frames but not the other way around.

Thanks Sprint!!  ;) I took a look at mine to refresh my memory, H&R must have made some gloss late style trigger guards, I have two of em with matching gloss spacers, both trigger guards have the relief for the trigger extension.

Thanks folks.  i figure the old shiny trigger guard is probably brittle and not as strong as a new one anyway.  I like matte finish better, so I'll swap when I do a trigger job.

Thanks.

The trigger guards are made of the same material. The "matte" finished ones are lightly grit blasted to dull the gloss.

I'm not sure about that.  Plastic isn't the same today as in '69.  I figure the formulation has probably changed, hopefully improved.  And I have always experienced that plastic gets brittle with age.  33 years is a fairly long time.

Maybe over concerned.  But I do like the matte finish better, and a parts change is easy.

Thanks.

Dang!  I got past the dreaded "forbidden" notice.  Anyway, here's a suggestion: get you a brass one from Track of the Wolf or Dixie Gun Works like they use on muzzleloaders.  They got 'em from kinda plain to rather ornate.  Cut your plastic even with the frame.  Somebody on here had one a while back, adds some bling.  Looking at doing one or more of mine maybe this summer.  GW
