My first H&R

I just picked up an H&R .223 bull barrel rifle. I have wanted one since I past on one at a local gun show like a month ago. This one was at my local gun shop with a scope for short $$ so I picked it up. the ser.# CBA   looking through the help section tells me its an SB2.  this is my first Brake Barrel Rifle other then some pellet guns.  I really like how simple they look .  they look well built. I was looking for a rifle to plink with. I use my 10-22 to pick apart bailing twine at 100 yrds . so I figured a .223 should do the same at 200yrds or a little more.  pluss My son goes shooting with me and I want to teach him how to take his time and shoot. the semi-auto 10-22 is not good for that     And reading a little it seems some came with 1-8, 1-9 or 1-12  rate of twist. not sure yet what I have. and what ammo shoots best through these.

CBA serial number should be 1-9. Dont think there was ever a 1-8. Welcome aboard! The 223 is one of the calibers that seem to shoot great in most handi's. Mine is a 1-12 and shoots great. Spend a little time in the FAQ sticky, tons and tons of info there.

With my reloads my .223 HB shoots about .31" c-c groups at 100 yards.  I have a 4-16x40 mildot on it and I've got card calculations out to 700 yards.  Farther you go more you have to calculate wind drift also though.  At 200 yards, piece of cake and sub 1" if done right.  Mine's a 1:9 and loves 55 gr. bullets.  I also download these using Unique and 45 gr. HP's as a .22 mag level small game gun.  Just aim down 2.5 mils and I don't even have to modify my scope.    I just picked up a .223 superlite and intend to really put this one through it's paces this summer.  My last load I'm really working on at the moment is using 65 gr Sierra Gamekings moving out about 2700 FPS for deer.    This is truly a do all gun if you reload.

Thanks guy's I will spend some time in the Fax  section.  Handy 101 looks like a good place to start. I hope to find some ammo soon. tough to find around here seems everyone is saving up for something  .  I did get a 22LR brick at the same time I bought the .223 they are like gold here .  but he had nothing in .223. he has a shipment due in tomorrow fingers crossed.

Tacklebury, that group is phenomenal, I'll never judge a rimless Handi again, I never should have in the first place..... I know some individuals who would be downright embarrassed if their beloved bolt gun,or AR was outshot by a Handi. That's better than I can do with my XM-15 at 100 or so.

The great thing was that was fired from a kneeling position over a burning barrel for a rest.    It actually shot a bit better when I got it on a real rest at the range, but I forgot my camera the second set.    I loaded some 52 gr. A-Max over some IMR4223 (was given to me so why not) and it didn't shoot as well as that load above even with match bullets.  I really love those ballistic tips in 55 gr.  Hoping some show back up on the shelves before I use up the ones I have.  lol
