Bullet weight for Stevens 200 .223?
« on: December 23, 2012, 07:11:18 PM »
My Stevens .223 shoots fairly well with 50 grain V-max bullets but with a 1-9 twist, should I be shooting a heavier bullet. Thanks, Don

You should be able to shoot whatever you need to do the job at hand.  My 1 in 9 shoots from 40 to 70 grain well enough.  It likes the 60's best, or at least of the ones I've tried.

Thanks Ben, I will try some 60 grain and see how it goes. The 50gr. shoot about 1" at 100 yards but I would think I could do a little better. My gun has a Boyds thumbhole stock that has been glassed and a new trigger so if I can't get it better, I might have to blame the operator ;D . Don

Mine shoots 40 and 50 grain fiocchi very well.  3/4 moa or better regularly, have had a couple of groups under 1/2" @ 100 yards.  Boyds thumbhole (not glassed), smoothed the trigger myself, cut factory barrel to 20" and recrowned.

I have two savage .223's.  Both love 50 grain ballistic tips.  One of them loves 40 grain vmax best of all, and the other really shoots 69grain Sierra Match Kings well.  Just depends on the barrel.

In my ar's with 1in 9 twist I always shot  65gr bullets, in my Savage 11 55gr vmax was king of accuracy. I truly believe 55 are probably the best, but your rifle will let you know what it likes.
XLI the one to go with.

Mine likes Hornady # 2266  55 gr SP  Using IMR 4198 21 gr.  I shoot this bullet in my TC Encore with same powder.  Both shoot MOA. Not bad for this old half blind man.  Fun guns to shoot.  Pretty cheap also.
                              Good shooting to all

I have an Axis in 223 with a 1 - 9" twist barrel that really likes the Hornady 75 Grain BTHP. I can seat the bullet way out, just .020" off the lands. OAL is 2.380" I have to single load them from the magazine. If I put two or more cases in the magazine, it does not feed well. The 75 BTHP also shoots stable in my Ruger Mini 14, but accuracy was to up to my standards. See my field report on the Axis in the Savage section to see a couple of targets shot with this bullet.

Good Shooting and Good Luck
