180gr in a 30in twist barrel
« on: May 12, 2013, 09:39:30 PM »
I was looking at a Rossi .357mag 16 inch lever action and saw that it has a 30 inch twist barrel.
Having read what you have said about using 180 gr bullets in .357 rifles. Would thy still work with the slower twist?
Have you ever had any feed back from any one using one of the Rossi's with your 180's?

I can't speak to one of Veral's bullets in this application, but I do have limited experience with a similar design.

I am currently doing load development for my Rossi, which is the exact same one as yours.  This 190 grain (180 with HP) stabilizes well in my gun at 750 fps (3.2 grains Red Dot) and 820 fps (3.8 grains Unique) out to 100 yards (the furthest I've shot it).  Both loads shoot 3 inches or better at 100 yards.  Here is a link to the bullet I'm shooting:

I was surprised they weren't tumbling at that distance.  BTW, my barrel is firelapped, if that matters any.  I size them to .359.

I never got the rifle but was looking at them. It looked like it would be a fun gun. After reading up on them thy seam more like kit guns with all the stuff one seams to have to do to get them to feed right. Some say thy have one that would feed anything others talk about all the trick stuff thy have to do to load ammo that will feed. I was thinking that  it would make a good little gun to have in a RV  to back up a .357 hand gun, getting a little more punch from the same ammo.

If you want a "backup gun", I'd go with a Marlin in .357......I like the mag. capacity.

I've made a lot of molds for Rossies without a clue that they had such a slow twist.  There have been no negative reports to date,  However, I would plan on shooting heavy loads using slow powders, with H110/ 296 the best.  They make the bullets zip along at 1700 1800 fps with givies enough spin to make them accurate.
